I am also about to start in a MICU/SICU; this isn't exactly a reference book but it is great to read if you're starting out in the ICU (I did my senior practicum in a MICU and loved this)- icufaqs.org. Good luck!

Congratulations on the move! It's a wonderful thing working in the ICU. We did an online course by aacn which was very informative. It is called ECCO Essentials of Critical Care Orientation. Somebody also gave me a Mosby's Nursing PDQ for Critical Care. It is small and fits in your pocket. It is broken down into body systems and is really user friendly. It does not go into patho on subjects rather it talks about assessment and possible findings for acute problems. It also has sections on lab values and monitoring parameters for PAP, CVP, art lines etc. Good luck and find some coworkers that you can trust. The have helped me far greater than any books!

Kathy White's Fast Facts for Adult Critical care...awesome! and if you have an ipod or iphone, she's got apps you can download making it even more portable.
