Reduce Hours/Increase Hours

When I accepted my job, I was scheduled 72 hours a pay (every two weeks). I want to reduce my hours to 60, but my employer says if those hours aren't available and posted, I can't ask for a reduction now. I have to wait until something comes available. Is that how all hospitals work? You can't ask to change hours whenever you want? Or vice versa increase hours? I would love some input from other RN's like me. Thank you.

it's typical that because your position was originally approved at 72 hours it needs to stay at 72. you may be lucky and convince your manager to petition for you, but changing hours means they need to completely re-approve your position at a lower need AND figure out a way to make up for your lost hours etc. yes, most hospitals work this way. i went through this and needed to change my hours due to APRN training- i was told that although they understood, that it was up to the nursing administrator to decide on. rather than try and beg for it and take a chance, then find out that they couldn't accommodate my needs,i decided to move on after over a dozen years.

You were hired for a specific FTE and that's what you'll be required to be scheduled. You can't just reduce hours when you want. Also insurance is often determined by FTE. Where I am that would be full time, and anything less is part time, insurance prices change at that break point.

I think you will have a very tough time finding a job that will let you work 60 hours per pay period. You would literally need to find a job that offers those hours, and you are asking for full time one week and part time the next, which I have never seen offered anywhere. I have seen plenty of places offer part time, two shifts per week jobs, so you might have to settle for 48 hours a pay period instead of 72 if you are really determined to reduce your hours, and just cross your fingers that you could pick up an extra shift above what you are scheduled for every couple of weeks.
