Red Cross or LTC training

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

I have two opportunities to become a CNA...

I can be trained by the Red Cross for $600 (payment can be made in increments over time). Nice comfy new place with new equipment...friendly instructors. Six week course M-F (7-3). Books included in fee. Clinicals are done at a top notch LTC facility. Instructor says she has been able to guarantee everyone a job...never had one walk away unemployed.by

Or I can be trained by an RN at a LTC that is under investigation. The course is free b/c of federal grant money. Books are free. The facility is blah. The RN was honest with me. She said she could not guarantee a placement at their facility or any others. But she could write reccomendations for me in Home Health or Hospice care. She said they hire frequently. She also painted a picture of what her current students were like...and ones from the past. Because it's free she said she gets all walks. The picture was "scarey." For instance, a student was being tested in clinicals. She was asked to do BP/Pulse. She had forgotten her watch so she just made up a number!!?? Didn't even ask to "borrow" one. Instructor had drawer full of them. Oh yeah, I will spare you the story about the women that wore a red thong under her white scrubs every day.

Does it matter where you train? Is it documented on your certification?

I did the Red Cross class. They can't guarntee employment. They don't do job placement. You can use your instructor (make sure to ask first) as a referrence.

I would be concerned about why the LTC is under investigation. You also need to think about why people hire frequently for some places, the turn over rate is high for a reason usually.

Yes, it is documented. It's also on the paperwork you send in to the state when you get you liscience through them.

Specializes in Geriatrics.

I'd be a little bit leery about the LTC place as well.. even though it's free, it's under investigation.

I did my training at Red Cross and had very good experiences there.
