Recommendations on Courses Before Nursing School?

Published

What are some classes to take before going to nursing school? I'm not talking about the pre-requisites that are required to get into nursing, but some that would be beneficial before actually being in nursing school? Thanks so much!

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

Languages, particularly anything commonly spoken in your area.

English- brushing up on these skills will be VITAL in nursing school and beyond.

Medical terminology, if you don't have a firm grasp on this yet. (not usually a prereq)

Specializes in Operating Room.

I second Medical Terminology.

I also took Abnormal Psychology and I feel that's been helpful during my clinical rotations.

Pathophysiology or medical terminology are good classes to take. I'm taking medical terminology over the summer.

Specializes in ICU.

Med Term has been invaluable to me. I don't know why it is not a requirement anymore. It used to be and I took it when it was. It has helped me in A&P and Micro.

I absolutely second pathophysiology! I'm currently taking Pathopharmacology and it has been such a disadvantage to not know the pathophysiology of disease processes as well as drug mechanism(s) of action to enter Med/Surg and other clinical rotations. My program is now moving this course into the first semester of the nursing program because we've had some difficulty.
