Recent LVN graduate in California and Unsure Of What To Do Now...

Published

Hi Everyone!

So, I just graduated from an LVN program in California about 2 weeks ago. Apparently there is a 3 to 4 month wait before I can take the NCLEX. I have no clue on what to do in the meantime. I thought I would be able to find a job that would hire a new graduate until I get my license...but I see that is not common in California. Any suggestions of what I could do in the meantime until I pass the NCLEX exam? Beside preparing for the NCLEX...as I am in the process of doing that now.

You can pass medication in an assisted living. Usually you don't need to be licensed. Your medical background should suffice. That can also prepare you if you're going to work in a skilled nursing facility. Or you can get more certificates so that when you do apply for an LVN job, you're more likely to get hired. But main thing to focus on is passing the NCLEX.

I studied during my 3 month wait. Every single day besides the weekend.

1. You can obtain your IV therapy & blood withdrawal certification.

2. You can work as a patient sitter, home care companion, medical receptionist, or some other healthcare-related job that does not require licensing or certification.

I thought it would take several months to take my NCLEX. But my test date came sooner than expected. (This was late 2013) I ended up finding a job in an ALF that paid me 12/hr until I passed the NCLEX and paid 27:hr after. This ALF had fired its med tech in order to hire LVNs.

I agree with Commuter's suggestions. I was a home care companion/caregiver in CA during and a little after completing LPN school. It will give you some very useful exp in the meantime. Congrats on your completion of the program!

Whoops...paid me **$17/hr** after I became licensed.
