Really need some advice....

U.S.A. Texas

Published

hi, i am an "old" new grad (may 2010) from california who is really considering re-locating to texas. i know the state is huge and that's partly why i am willing to pay to get endorsed there. i figure there has to be somewhere in texas that is willing to hire an out-of-state new grad! i am reasonably young (late 20s), single, don't really have anything holding me back, and would love to start my career asap. i need advice on narrowing down my search to a particular region of texas. i have heard many good things about austin, but have also heard that the city is not too great for new grads. in fact, it seems like most of the big cities all across the united states are not hiring new grads. as a native californian, i am used to big cities and having a very active social life. i understand that i may have to give some of that up in order to pursue my dream as a nurse. my question is, where should i be looking? i don't mind commuting a little so that i can live in a decent sized city but work in a smaller area outside the city. please help! i would love to hear from any texas natives or anyone else who has re-located who could offer me some advice.

All the major cities and their surrounding smaller communities (those within a 1 to 1.5 hour commute) are completely saturated in Texas, averaging hundreds of applications per new graduate opening. You will do best to look in truly rural areas and the Texas/Mexico border towns. I would not move until you have a job offer with a start date in hand.

Austin is a great city but not realistic for a new grad moving from out of state; like most of the metropolitan areas of Texas, there are plenty of new grads competing for/snatching up those jobs. Try places like Wichita Falls, Tyler, Temple, Waco, Lubbock, Amarillo and even smaller. Best of luck.

You and I have a lot in common as far as your current situation is concerned. I graduated May 2010 and I'm from Huntington Beach. I did a lot of research (nationwide) trying to pick the best best location to live. The best location is obviously subjective for different reasons but as far as cost of living, new grad opportunities; after months of researching, San Antonio was my final pick. I've been here for three months and have been employed at a great hospital as a GN for two and a half months. I'm finishing orientation this week. I haven't had a lot of time to explore yet but I do like what I've seen so far. It's definitely warmer and there's no surfing :crying2: but I do feel like I made the right choice. Let me know if I can help out in any way. Best of luck!

Hey, thanks for the reply Jaykster. I tried to befriend you but don't really know how all that works on Allnurses. How do I send you a message?
