Real Life in NYC

U.S.A. New York

Published

I have some questions for all the NYC nurses out there, as I wish to relocate there someday (i.e., approx 2 years or so):

1. Do you love living in NYC? Why or why not?

2. Any hospitals there with magnet status?

3. Which hospitals there have the best reputations (in terms of quality of care, treatment of nurses and staff)?

4. What's your average annual salary and is it enough to live on in expensive NYC? I'm single, young, no kids, so trying to support a family would not be an issue for me.

5. Oh and I guess while I'm at it, to any of the single NYC RNs out there, how is the dating scene in the City?

6. Is travel nursing the best way to get to NYC, in the first place?

PS- The reason that I'm waiting approx 2 years to relocate is because I am a recent grad (Spring '05) and feel like I need to chalk up some more experience. I'm currently an RN in Oregon, working med-surg/tele at a major teaching hospital.

Thanks!!!!!! Your inputs will be greatly appreciated.

I park my car on the street....once you get used to alternate side, it's no big deal, you really only have to worry about it a max of 4 days of week, 3 if you plan a little :-) Gargages are mad expensive!

If only the rest of us could have your experience.

Hope you'll keep in touch. A few of us will be coming next year.

I grew up in Warren btw. Where are you from?

I'm not planning on going anywhere in the near future, so anyone coming out just PM me :-)

If you don't wanna go to bx, qu, or bk, you could always try staten island.

the city is just a ferry ride away

I think I'd rather pay around 2k to live in Manhattan where there's a lot going on...Roosevelt Island at the furthest.

I haven't had a roommate since 2002, and that was only for a few months. Been on my own almost 10 years, but I'm hoping to be able to find someone who's quiet and clean.

That reminds me...do most hospitals offer overtime?

Ohhhhh, I love this thread!!!!!

NYC is my absolute favorite place on Earth. I have visited several times, and in October '04, I packed up all my stuff and moved up there to see if I could make it. My family and friends thought I was CRAZY (and I guess I was, lol). Unfortunately, I had no degree and companies only wanted to pay me what I was making down here in Texas, and that was not feasible. :( I eventually moved back, but I promised myself that I'd give it another try after I graduated nursing school

I can't wait to be back in NYC again! Can I come visit those who live there now, so I can get my fix in the meantime? ;) :lol2:

as long as you're not an A&M fan we can hang  Course I won't be there for another 11 months.

LOL! Well, I guess I'm in luck, because I'm not an A&M fan. I won't be in NYC for at least 2 years (just starting school this month). :o
