I have been asked to re sign at the hospital I'm at. I like it here alot, and its a short drive to home. My question, do they usually pay you more money to stay? Should I use that as a bargaining tool? My recruiter is balking at me asking for more money, although if I didn't stay, I was going to look for a better paying travel assignment anyway? Thoughts?

Usually? They should in my opinion. But my opinion will not help you convince them. What will help is if you find another assignment and then negotiate from a position of strength. You may even find you won't care anymore about staying where you are.

They should be doing something to offer you an incentive to stay and extend. A higher hourly wage, increase in your per diem (if there is room to increase it), a nicer apartment, license renewals, BLS/ACLS/CCRN recert fees, or even a completion bonus. Keep in mind that the reimbursements are taxable monies. Do you pay to park at your hospital? Do you have a uniform they can reimburse you for? etc.
My current assignment has asked me to extend and my company is trying to move me which would mean a further commute to work. If they don't obtain appropriate housing by the end of the week I will walk away from the extension. Sometimes you have to play hardball to get what you want and show them that you really are serious about your needs.
Reimbursements are not taxable. Self defining.
If you don't have a tax home (or are not legitimately working away from your tax home) , compensation such as housing can no longer be called "reimbursements", it is simply taxable compensation.
As the OP mentions "short drive to home" it is possible all of her compensation is taxable no matter what the agency calls it. Depends on whether or not she has and needs housing at her assignment location (versus commuting).

Just an opinion....if you extend I would ask for more money or completion bonus simply because they are saving money due to not having to give you the travel reimbursements that you would (or should) have received from your initial assignment.

Regardless of the circumstances, you should ALWAYS renegotiate your contract. ALWAYS!!! While they may be asking you to extend solely because they need a warm body and you're a known quantity, you'd be a fool not to get something MORE out of the situation. HOWEVER, IF you have no other options (in regards to another assignment), it may be best to negotiate for something other than money. You wouldn't want to rock the boat so much that it tips over. Good luck!
