hi, madeb, and welcome to allnurses! :welcome:
a teaching plan is not much different from a care plan. you need to assess what your patient already knows about diabetes and what they need to know. then, you need to figure out what teaching methods would be most suitable. then, put a plan together.
the national institute of diabetes and digestive and kidney diseases (http://www2.niddk.nih.gov/) has gobs of information about diabetes for consumers. there is all kinds of downloadable handouts and printouts on this website: http://www.diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/a-z.asp that you should check out because i am sure that you will be able to use some of them for your patient. another website that you may find useful is: http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/root/vumc.php?site=diabetes_clinic&doc=5555 - "learn about diabetes".
good luck with your project!

Hello. I took care of a patient with a newly diagnosed dm.
Teaching plan is basically what you would want to know if you were that patient. First, explain in layperson terms about diabetes, than go on and teach the patient taking insulin or oral. Time they should take it. Teach your pt. about the accucheck machine. Care of the patient, bathing, dry skin, barefoot, etc. When to call the doctor.
Foods to avoid. Include pictures or pamphlets with your teaching plans.
I guess thats really it, its like one of those pamphlets you get when you go to the doctors office. Except in your own words.
I hope that helps.
Good Luck!
We are doing cardio right now. I am alittle inundated, but I thought I needed a break. I use this site as my break time.
