California Nurses Association may be targeting University of Chicago after Cook County win
If there's a campaign map on the wall at the Oakland, Calif., headquarters of the California Nurses Association, the Chicago area must be ground zero.
Since winning away Cook County's 1,800 nurses from the Illinois Nurses Association, the independent union has linked with nurses at more than 20 Chicago-area hospitals with the goal of organizing a handful of them, union officials say.
One possible target is the University of Chicago Hospitals, where workers from the national organizing arm of the California Nurses have been talking with nurses.
They say they are only helping the 1,300 University of Chicago nurses, who belong to the Illinois Nurses Association. But they do not rule out an eventual organizing drive like the one they successfully staged at Cook County.
The situation is "reminiscent" of what happened with Cook County's nurses, confirmed Fernando Losada, head of Midwest operations for the National Nurses Organizing Committee, the national arm for the California Nurses Association.
Full Story: Raids on members causing high fever in nurse unions [Chicago Tribune,United States]
No one from CNA went to raid another union. If they hadn't chosen CNA they would have tried to change unions anyway.
This is a good point. CNA can't "raid" anything without consent and a majority vote from the membership. So this idea that CNA is "raiding" other unions is really a misnomer.
I was at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center just yesterday, and the RN's told me they dumped their old union and replaced them with CNA because they wanted better results. It didn't sound to me like CNA "raided" anything over there either. The RN's simply wanted a change in union representation.

Kevin, you seem to knock California quite a bit. You want to go, go. Don't let the collective door hit you on the way out. You may be back if your wife doesn't like the place you are taking her to. I dont suppose you will leave the nice profit you made on your California house, will you?
Well, nurses do make more money in poop hole California, but if you can find a place to live, that is safe, for less than $500,000.00 let us all know. The cost of living is very high in California, and nurses make a drop in the bucket.
Poop hole California, roflmao. I don't mean to brag, but outside my back door, I have a magnificient view of the Pacific Ocean. From my front yard, I see rolling hills. It rarely goes above 80 degrees in the summer or below 50 in the winter. Too bad for the people who didn't get into the housing market earlier, but when I die, I'll be leaving my son a piece of real estate that will be worth over $1 million. You have a fascinating definition of poop hole.

smog, traffic, crime, landslides, forest fires, earthquakes, sewage spills into the ocean...
what did I miss?
Yeah ... but union organizing, campaigns and elections usually take several months, sometimes years. So ... there's a good chance you and your wife could have found out about the possibility of the facility going union. It's not like union organizing and elections happen overnight. Nor are these activities done in secret. It's all very public. And in SoCal, so many hospitals have gone union in just the last 2-3 years ... it wouldn't be hard to figure out that a facility could go union at any time.If conservatives like yourself really hate the existing union election system, then they need to get the Republican Congress to change federal law, because that's what mandates and governs the majority vote system you're complaining so much about. Congress is run by Republicans now so, your complaint really should be with them.

Well, I had hoped that common sense would prevail...apparently, (and I have the PMs to prove it) that there are alot of nurses on this board that disagree with Unions as much as, or more than I do. However, the mob mentality (the union one) is that if you are against unions you are some knuckle dragging troglodyte.
I, apparently, was wrong. People believed the union propaganda. I do have hope, because apparently Cedar Sinai Medical Center appealed the vote and on the revote..the CNA lost. (thanks to the poster who sent me that info).
I would complain to the reublican congress, but it would do me little good, as I am completely ignored by the FemNazi Boxer, disregarded by Feinstein and my congresswoman is so far to the left, she doesnt have a right hand anymore.
Also, many of the issues can be addressed with a change in the state law.
California can become a 'right-to-work' state..
Speaking of which, no one has answered the question of why tcan't the workers that want a union can have one, and those that do not simply do not have to join. IF they elect not to join then they are exempt from dues, however, they will have negotiate their own terms of employment?

I wasn't aware that the rest of the country is free of smog, traffic, crime, or natural and enviromental disasters, or that those places that are don't have other problems that don't plague California. I was aware that few of them enjoy our awesome climate and fewer still will ever know the satisfaction of outrageous property value appreciation.

interest on the rise...market going to cool, bubble going to burst anyone?
I feel sorry for those that recently purchased, or have their homes mortaged a couple of times to capitialize on that wealth.

The union opponents do make a bunch of noise but, most of the time, it's just a bunch of noise. Usually, they don't have the votes. CNA does occassionally lose elections but not very often, especially in recent years. Union opponents also tried to decertify CNA in two facilities last year but, they lost both of those elections. And, btw, the Cedars Sinai election was not overturned by a majority vote but was thrown out by the Bush appointed NLRB. Not quite the same thing as losing the RN vote itself which, they didn't.
If you were somehow counting on California RN's to vote against unionization in most cases ... well ... it just doesn't happen very often. I don't think there would be much support for becoming a right to work state either. Ratios have made CNA pretty popular. And, the fact of the matter is ... union facilities generally do have better pay and benefits. So, most RN's really don't see a reason to vote against them.
I'm not entirely opposed to union membership becoming optional but, again, the federal law would have to be changed. Regardless of Feinstein and Boxer, you do have a Republican majority in Congress so the time to change that would be now. Yet, I haven't heard of Republicans of proposing such an initiative.
