I'm in a similar position, except for the fact that I'm married to an Aussie and living in the UK.

In the process of applying for a visa now, with a view to moving permanently to Melbourne in January. I'm a RMN [Registered Mental Nurse] with 2 and a half years experience post-training [3 year diploma] in the UK. Currently working in older age MH, but not sure whether to stay in that area or move into "adult" [sic] MH.

I'm unsure of whether to try to get a permanent post ASAP or to try an agency to get the "lie of the land" i.e. where to work, where NOT to work etc. If I was to stay in the UK I'd be looking in to becoming a CPN [Community Psychiatric Nurse] round about now, so that would be my ultimate ambition in Oz too. Managing a caseload of community based clients etc. although I may be better off initially being hospital based... [?]

Anybody got any strong views on this or want to share their experiences/knowledge?

This question has been asked and answered before. The only thing I can tell you is that you can be guaranteed a job here because we are very short of trained psych nurses. It is often best to apply directly to the hospitals themselves where you want to work and live. Like the UK ours is mostly a public system but there are private facilities here.
