"Getting ahead" help

Nurses LPN/LVN

Hey there!

I am starting LPN classes in April. In a lot of threads on here I have read where seasoned LPNs suggest to the pre-students to try and read up and maybe get ahead on the classes if at at all possible. I am hoping for suggestions for books that would be good to purchase for this purchase. And I also do prefer books to websites but if anybody knows of exceptional websites related to this matter, will you let me know of these, too? I am a pretty busy mom of 2 small children so any preparation I can do before classes start will probably be best.

BTW I already ordered the Medical Dosage Calculations book that Pagandeva2000 suggested in the Medical Math thread. I can't wait to get it.

Of course, being a poor nursing student, please also let me know where I can get these books for cheap! :lol2:

Thanks everybody!

Foundations and Adult Nursing by Christenson and Kockrow. It is a great summary of all domains you will learn in nursing from fundamentals to med-surg, peds, women's health and psych. I discovered it on line from Amazon.com for $79. They also sell used versions, so, you may be able to catch a great deal. It may be an older edition, but this is for reading, not your actual text. Right now, I would just casually read, and write a list of questions for you to do research on. Or you can post and ask us here. I have no problem helping if I know the answer or can refer to someplace that you can. Kudos to you for starting early!

It seems like I'm going to be in the minority here, but my suggestion is to accrue as much rest, relaxation, and enjoyment as possible before your school's program starts. After all, you might not be able to obtain any free time once the program begins.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

:yeahthat:

Actually, I agree completely. Spend time with your kids and husband, get your house in order, rest and relax.

I don't think spending time reading ahead is going to be worth losing the time to do other things right now.

Good luck in school.

I totally know what your going thru- I did it myself three years ago with two small children, and a hubby- who God bless em- survived on hamburger helper and hot dogs for a year- didnt complain about the laundry piles- and still love me:redpinkhe. The point is- once you start school- you will be buried in books- seriosly. Enjoy your free time while you can- I know the exitement of being so ready to jump in. But once the fatigue sets in - and your quality time with your kids is spent explaining pictures in your L & D book, you will gladly trade that for a trip to the local Chuck E cheese;). The best thing I found was this site, talking to classmates, instructors, and my oh so loved Tabers. GOOD LUCK!!!

I would like to suggest a Medical Terminology class or book. Most LVN/LVN courses don't offer MED TERM. When I started nursing school I had alredy taken a course as I was a MA, peers in my class who had never worked in the medical field had some trouble grasping the med term.

Thanks so much to everybody for the suggestion and encouragement. Okay, okay I'll take it easy! I know once I begin school I'll be buried in textbooks so I see that it makes sense to relax while I can. My husband was happy to hear your advice!
