"For Profit" vs. "Non Profit" employers?

I have been looking around for a position working as a RN. From what I have researched so far (and the extent of my research is minimal), the "For Profit" nursing homes tend to have lower employee satisfaction overall. Do you think "For Profit" facilities are better - worse - or the same as working for "Non Profit" ones & should I take this into consideration when applying for nursing home jobs. Especially since nursing homes have some of the scariest lack of staffing stories around?

The biggest difference I've seen is in Union jobs vs. Nonunion jobs, regardless of the profit status of the organization. At my nonunion jobs I've had them try to force me to pay for my own mandatory Ed. (despite them saying it'd be provided in my orientation) and work there 5 years before being eligible for health insurance. I would never work nonunion again.

After working for years in non profit facilities and witnessing highly greedy deals and practices, I almost WANT to go to a for profit facility. At least the objective there is a lot more transparent!

This topic is incredibly interesting and not at all easy. Recently, the results of a study completed by the Harvard School of Public Health and Brigham & Women's Hospital came out. It is entitled "Association Between Hospital Conversions to For-Profit Status and Clinical and Economic Outcomes." It's a fantastic read that concludes with: "Hospital conversion to for-profit status was associated with improvements in financial margins but not associated with differences in quality or mortality rates or with the proportion of poor or minority patients receiving care."
