I've seen this phrase many times so far on this forum. For me, it would have to be a totally serious offense to go and tell on a co-worker. I get the feeling that some people here are tattletales and like to get their co-workers in trouble.
Have you ever reported something about a co-worker to your manager? Have you ever been reported? What would make you turn in a co-worker?
Yes, I have reported one of my co-workers. This nurse did not give ANY of the patients meds ALL NIGHT. The patient was in for CP-R/O MI. When I came in the next shift, the last time the meds were taken out was when I took them out the day before. This nurse got fired, but, what eles could I do? If I didn't report it, the med error would have been on me as well as the other nurse.
And yes, I have been reported as well. I was being acused of using drugs, but the manager would not accept a urine drug test to prove her wrong. "Just a fact finding talk" she said. BULL!!@!!!!

There is a nurse on my unit who thinks that tattling about other nurses imperfections to the manager is the way to help people become better nurses. I don't see how, since it's not like the manager is following up on that type of petty stuff (she has other things to do). To me, this nurse seems very patronizing and condescending towards other nurses in her mentality. And honestly, she tattles to the manager because she's a lousy "leader" even though she has worked on the unit for a long time. There are better ways to help people become better at their jobs than tattling.
I also don't have a very high opinion of managers that put up with tattling. One manager told me that there are some things the manager needs to know about, and some things that we as employees and co-workers should be sorting out on our own.
That being said, I've reported nurses for being impaired on the job, and being abusive to patients.
In 2007, we are *supposed* to be moving past a culture of blame in the medical fields, so I don't think filling out an occurrence report on ordinary mistakes (like med errors) is to be considered "reporting someone" in some kind of finger-pointing way. Incompetence is not the same as making a mistake. (heaven help us all!)
