Crna's out there:
How would you feel and respond to the phrase" you are just a nurse too".
My place of employment is shall I say "less than respectful" to CRNA's. All too often the aforementioned statement is directed in my path. I know of nothing that I do to provoke such a statement. How would "you are just an orderly or you are just a circulator go over?"
We are totally overshadowed by the MDA's. It is unbelievable how the nurses and scrub tecks ( i misspelled on purpose) lol) suck up to the mds. I can ignore that and am thankful that I don't need to suck up to anyone.
The one of many situations in which I was reminded that I was just a nurse was during placement of a spinal (which I was doing)
We turned the patient to the left lateral position and she had a wound that had silvadene cream on it. This left a terrible mess right up the spine where I needed to prep. I had already started opening my spinal tray and gloves when we found this. One of the nurses went out to get a washcloth. When he came back in he handed it to me and I just looked at him kinda funny I guess. Thats when he said "well you are just a nurse too" I found that to be offensive. Not that I am above cleaning a patient but I have done my share of that. The way I feel, is I earned my degree and paid for it in more ways than one. I have never seen another crna, pa , md clean a patient so why am I expected by this guy to do it??
I feel the need almost daily to have to defend what crnas do in this OR. Do you experience the same things?
How do you rebel this type of behavior.
thanks

If the circulator was not willing to provide the care the patient needed, then he proved himself to be unprofessional. Anyone in the room can wash the patient's back off - surgeon, circulator, scrub, etc. You don't need an advanced education to do that.
Were you sterile still? You could have just rpelied to the circulator "I am sterile, would you mind wiping the back off? Thanks!" You will find that a sweet smile will get you pretty far!
Thanks piper for your understanding post.I am an advanced practice nurse. I hold a degree in anesthesiology and that is what I practice, not bedside nursing. Sorry, but that is how I feel. CRNA's have paid their dues. If you had gone thru the rigor of CRNA education not to mention the expense to obtain an advanced degree you would understand. Obviously you dont understand my positon on this post.
SO FORGET IT. JUST MORE OF THE SAME. NURSES ALWAYS EAT THEIR YOUNG. THATS WHY THE NURSING PROFESSION GETS SCREWED EVERY WAY IT TURNS. INSTEAD OF UPLIFTING ONE ANOTHER, YOU TEAR EVERYBODY DOWN.

We're not tearing everyone down, i think you were expecting a majority to understand right off the bat, and didn't get what you expected.
Probably because your first post came across as insulting (eating) in itself.

You are right I don't understand your plight. Who cares what kind of advanced degree you have. You are still a nurse and always will be. How long would it of taken you to clean up the patient, 5-10 seconds?
Maybe you can check to see if they can give your super-duper advanced degree different initials...like cMDa or cDOa. Then I think you would be happy and get the "respect" you so deserve. I hope you enjoy your NURSING career.

I hate to say it but if everyone else thinks your wrong, you probably are. Personally if it were me I'd recheck me attitude.
I don't care if some one on the medical team (nurse, MD, whoever) is also the richest person in your town and the ruler of the world. If they are working with a patient they still are not above cleaning there back, or their A$$ for that matter.
Reality Check Please!
Ok, I just finished with didactic and feel like I went to h*** and came back to tell the tale. It is true, I did start as a nurse and there is an "RN" in crna. but, lets put it into perspective......a person with advanced practice in anesthesia deserves as much respect as an MDA. Every CRNA I know has been referred to as "one of the nurses" and found offense with it. For the simple reason that they worked hard for their education and would like to be recognized as a nurse ANESTHETIST.
One of my friends summed it up really well- any person who can tell me what cell makes heprin, the nerst for potassium and ventilation vs perfusion for dependant and non-dependant lung fields deserves some credit b/c you KNOW they been thru heck to get to the place they are at!
For the simple reason that they worked hard for their education and would like to be recognized as a nurse ANESTHETIST.
I'm a firm believer that someone has to act like a person that deserves to be respected, unfortunately there are people out there that get 'person that deserves to be respected' confused with 'holier than thou'.
Unfortunately, it appears we'll need more than a few truthful threads to deflate his head. The greatest most respected leaders of all time lead by demonstrating servant leadership and respect for all those around them. The fact that the OR nurses expected him to wipe off the back is an indication that he has shown little respect for them in the past.
Our nursing background is what profoundly differentiates our care from anesthesiologists. We have a caring component with our anesthesia delivery that physicians are often deficient in demonstrating. Our nursing background is also what distinguishes us from the AAs. (Oooops, did I open up a can with that comment?)
