i go in for my college's new student orientation tommorrow and i have a few questions those who are adult learners do you find it hard to fit in or are there alot more adult learners now?

also those who areb adult learners that have kids do you use the campus daycare and if you get financial aid are you able to use financial aid to help pay for it?

also if you are approved for financial aid but your funds just are not in your account yet will you still be able to get books and all and just pay when the funds go into your school account?

I can't answer all of your questions because my kids are in school so I don't do daycare, and when they have holidays I have family to help, but I can tell you there are a lot of adult learners out there, especially it seems in NS. I fit in fine and have only had minor trouble keeping up my work. I am entering NS with a 3.0, so it can be done. Our school is a CC so there is no daycare, in fact, they have signs posted that children on campus is discouraged. I haven't had to do Financial aid yet either so I don't know what is covered by the money. Good Luck!

oh my heavens! there are a ton of "non-traditional" students at my college campus. i'd say we make up a good 1/2 of our nursing class. it wasn't hard to fit in at all. just sit beside someone who has caring eyes and a sincere smile and you'll be making friends in no time.

as for financial aid, are you asking about subsidized childcare? you can apply for it through your county of residence (job and family services) and take it about anywhere you go. hubby makes just barely enough $, so we didn't qualify. our little guy goes to a traditional daycare with lots of kids to play with. when he's in there full time, we pay about $540 a month. it's exceptional care, too-- worth every penny. my college does not offer daycare. but if it did, i would take full advantage of it.

as for the college financial aid; many colleges are different. if i were you i'd call the business/financial aid office tomorrow and ask them. i'm sure there is some kind of safety net so you can purchase your books.

good luck~!

I can't answer all your questions due to lack of experience in certain areas, but I can tell you that you shouldn't be worried about being a "non-traditional" student. I would also say half our class would fall into that category and one of my best friends in the program fits in that category! She is about 12 years my senior and we became friends instantly. It's easy to fit in....you see others there for a common cause way more than age differences, etc! :)

In my nursing classes out of 14 that graduated only 2 were in their 20's. One was in her late 50's. No campus daycare there though, so I cant tell you about that. good luck

I am 33 and have no problems making friends with people from all ages and backgrounds. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

I do not use the campus daycare. I wish I could because it is cheaper, but the campus if far away and my clinicals are not so I would have to drive to campus to drop of kids and come all the way back for clinicals. I do use some of my loan money to pay for childcare.

My financial aid funds are not in my account but I was able to order books already. They subtract the funds from my account before they reimburse me the difference.

Hope that helps...Good luck!

NEVER LET AGE HOLD YOU BACK....remember, you will still be that "age" and not have reached your goal.....what your bring into the program with your life experience is worthwhile.....most programs have student's returning after they have worked for their original degree and got "let go". Nurses can always find a job at any age.....GO FOR IT!

i don't know about the daycare or finaid situation, but i wanted to echo what everyone else was saying... at my new student orientation, out of 40 students, only three of us were under 24 (the age of "independence" for financial aid purposes). i'd say at least half of my classmates are 30+ & probably a quarter are 40+ years old. it seems like nursing school pulls a lot of "non-traditional" students.

I am 34 and find I fit in very well! In fact, most of our nursing class are adult learners. There are no students fresh out of HS, because where I attend (at a community college) you need to have tons of prereqs to get in....So it requires atleast a year or two of college. Just from what I saw at orientation, I'd say the youngest are in their mid twenties.

As far as financial aid goes, if you didn't qualify for the subsidized loans, you can apply for the unsubsidized loans. You should qualify for $7500 a year if you are a freshman or $8,500 for a sophmore. You can use this $$ for childcare, etc!
