How long did it take you to feel comfortable in LTC?
It seems this way in all LTC's I have been in. You just have to develop your own rythym and pattern. Unfortunately we have to take short cuts. But I never leave pills setting I mark a refuse and if the time frame allows return for a second try but if not they dont get them. If it is a super important med I call the MD to get an order for admin out of timeframe

Calling all LPNs?? What is and is not in your Scope of Practice compared to an RN?
In VA I can do anything except hang blood and the first 15 min of the infusion, draw from a PAC/PICC, and hospital wise the admission assessment is to be done by a RN

crocs
I thought all the "holes" i have are beaches maybe only the pearl are because I have noticed a big comfort difference in my fuschia and chocolate ones. I have heard too that it depends on what facility manuf your shoes that the ones manuf in the china plant arent as comfy as those from canada but I havent found that to be true with mine. I even emailed crocs about it and they denied any manuf differences in the shoes and said they didnt know why the shoes felt different.

Like Crocs? Try these!
I do think that crocs are about 1 size bigger than traditional sizing at least for women. And the specialist rocks cant wear the vent cause we cant have any holes, but i have also noticed a lot less of the croc stops.

Frustration - I am sure you can relate
"Well meaning" families are the bane of a nurse's existance. The other day I had a son complain that I didnt give mama a prn pain medication while she was SLEEPING. How much pain could she have been in?

Changing a patient's diaper while they are standing ?
WOOHOO! Shaving cream is the best thing ever not only does it get rid of the smell but it is really moisturizing too. But as far a changing someones brief while standing. If they can stand do it. Its cleaner, faster and has them doing something instead of laying in bed.

EEK! There's a MAN in my room!
actually whenever possible I do make the same consideration. If there is a man uncomfortable with females seeing them, then I get them a man if possible if not then I try to talk to them and do what I can. I have even called sons to the ltc in the middle of the night for a man. And they wre all thankful to me for that

EEK! There's a MAN in my room!
"But when it comes to deciding who gets to touch and enter my body, I don't give a DAMN about staffing. You want to compel or pressure me into a male caregiver? Fine. Make sure you've got a good psych resident on call that night, because you may be calling a consult."-elizabells Along with getting orders for restraints, a large dose of haldol and pulling your own head out of your orifice if someone touches me and I dont want them too :angryfire

EEK! There's a MAN in my room!
AMEN!! I have worked in LTC along side male nurses and aides. They would not take care of a female that was not able to make the decision it was okay for her. I respected this of them. Some people forget that these people who are 70 80 90 years old are from a different era. My little old ladies have probably been seen naked by 3 people: their mothers, husbands and doctor only. As for racists I have had one who used the n word if he saw a black person on tv. I didnt assign him black nurses or aides but not because of his right to refuse but to keep them from hearing that word.

1st 2 weeks in clinical
Don't worry about the know it all's. In my class about 1/3 of us including me were CNA's. It was really hard on me to get things done in clinicals because we did clinicals in the LTC where I already worked. My classmates would sometimes get upset with me because I wouldnt show them every little thing about the patients because I didnt want to be seen as a Know it ALL. The one person in my class who was a big pain though had passed her CNA but never worked as one and tried to act like she knew everything in front of the others but had to ask me how to use a thermometer. I think that she was my true test in school because if I made it thru without killing her I can put up with any patient
