Quick question about NET

i went to see an advisor about the nursing program at chandler gilbert community college and she said i had to complete my pre reqs before i could take the net, is this true? she also made it sound like it was quite a waiting list for their program. i have my summer and fall schedules, and am very excited about getting started, i just wonder if anyone has been told anything different? can someone please help with my confusion?? i guess what i need to know is what are the steps for getting into a nursing program????

i'll tell you what i know about the mcc system, for what it is worth. assuming that chandler/gilbert is a part of that system. you can take the net anytime you want, in fact the folks at asu recommend paying the $25 testing fee in order to take the test and get a feel for what it is like prior to taking it at asu. the 'gotcha' about the net is that for the mcc system, the test score is good for only one year. so if you pre-reqs will take you longer than one year to complete, the score won't count. i wouldn't necessarily discourage you from taking it, but just realize that if you are farther out than one year, you will have to take it again and that is the score that would be a part of your application.

as to the wait, again, assuming that chandler gilbert is part of the mcc system, it is about two semester after completing your pre-reqs. for example, if you are finished with pre-reqs following the spr. '06 semester, it is most likely you not get in to a school until jan. '07. there are a number of factors as to the wait, namely how many alternative insitutions you choose on your application (i.e. gateway cc, mesa cc, scottsdale cc etc.)

I'm not going to the same school but we also had to take the NET test in order to get in. I'm attending CCAC and we were allowed to take the NET test whenever, but we had to take it before we could get a nursing application. However, in my state (pennsylvania) our test results are good for 2 years and you can only take the test 2 times in 1 year. I hope this might help a little bit considering they are two different schools.

Also, as far as waiting lists, that's what these tests are for, it's kinda like their way to weed out those that won't do good in nursing or at least that's how it was explained to me, I know in my school for the fall 06 semester there was 400 that applied and only 180 got in, luckily i was one of those 180!!

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I understand it better now. I think I still need to make an appointment with the person who runs the program, they would probably be more informative about my questions and concerns. I know the advisor told me what she knew, but I am sure there is much more to learn. Anyway Thanks again. I appreciate any info I can get.

There are a number of factors as to the wait, namely how many alternative insitutions you choose on your application (i.e. Gateway CC, Mesa CC, Scottsdale CC etc.)

Sorry - that information I do not have. I know the amount of spaces that are available each semester changes with each college. Although it would be a lot of work, my suggestion is to have an advisement session with the ones that you are really interested in (and willing to drive to, given $3.00 per gallon gasoline!) and get an understanding of the specifics for that college.

To go and visit each school and talk with advisors is a good idea. I am in block I at Phoenix College (which was my fourth choice). I waited one semester and was placed in the third round. PC is a long way for me to drive but I'd say 1/3 of our class is from the East Valley. If you don't want to wait, I'd look at all the colleges you're willing to drive to. However, only put down the ones you'd REALLY be willing to drive to. YOu don't want to get placed there and then have to turn it down. That looks bad on your record.

We carpool and get to drive in the HOV lane so it's really not that bad. Also, I love PC....had the opportunity to transfer to MCC (my first choice) and now I don't want to!

A note about the NET test: the trick is to take it about a year out from when you expect to be ready to turn in your application. However, if you fail the test, you cannot re-take it for something like 3 months. So, take it 12-11 months out and if you fail, you can take it again and still be on track to put in your application without any lost time. It would be a bummer if you took it right before turning in your app and failed and then had to wait another three months before you can take it again.

It confirms one thing I was told by many of the advisors - it doesn't matter where you apply. There is always someone who wants to go to that program. So - there is no shorter wait time at one program versus another. Put down where you want to go and hope for the best...
