Quick Question About Compact License

Published

I just have a quick question about my nursing license. I graduated last year in 2009. My Rn license is a compact license, which goes for the state of Texas and Arkansas. I live in Texas. Does my license mean that I can work in Arkansas just as well. Do I need to go through some special process to work in Arkansas? I have applied at some facilities in Arkansas and just want to know in case I get an opportunity to work there. Thanks.

If you acquire endorsement in one compact state, will you have to receive individual endorsement to work in the remaining compact states.

That depends on whether you're a permanent resident of the initial compact state. If you live in that state, you will get a "compact license" and you will be able to use that license to work in any other compact state, as long as you maintain your permanent residence in the original state.

If you apply for licensure in a compact state but don't live in that state, you'll get a regular, traditional license from that state that will only be good in that state and will not have "compact privileges."

The NLC doesn't matter at all unless you live in a compact state.

Ditto - KC is in 2 states (Kansas and Missouri)... anyone know about that?

AFAIK (according to the current NCSBN listing), Kansas isn't a compact state (member of the NLC), so Missouri joining the compact won't change anything re: KC. One would still need a MO license to work in MO, and a KS license to work in KS (unless the two states have some private agreement just between the two of them -- I believe there are a few situations like that around the US).
