Questions about BP

Published

I am not in NS yet, so I thought I would ask an opinion here about blood pressure. My mom has been diagnosed with high BP. Her face just had a recent breakout and she was complaining it felt like it was "on fire". She went to a grocery store BP machine and it read...

118/103

Is this possible, or a bad test. If it is possible, what would that BP represent?

From there she went to a local clinic (the one that diagnosed and prescribed Rx for it which she doesnt take due to lack of $)

Their reading was...

190/130

What would that represent?

They told her she should go to a hospital.

She went to the ER and now the reading is...

174/130

They admitted her for overnight observation and did some blood work.

The doc asked her why she doesn't take her BP meds. She told him about the $$ and he replied with "They make a lot of generic forms that are really cheap".

Her reply to him was "$50 dollars to you isn't what $50 is to me". I liked that one. Some people don't realize how hard it can be to scrape that money together.

So, my questions are about the readings. Is the 1st one even possible and still be alive? How dangerous was the 2nd one? The hospital even told her that they set themselves up for a lawsuit for not taking action to admit her. BP has always confused me...like what does a high Diastolic/systolic mean?

Thank you for any answers you can provide. I hope one day to be able to do the same.

the alternative is not to see her dtr become a nurse.

I don't understand what this says. Not to see her doctor become a nurse??? Sorry, I'm floating between my sons 1st grade homework and this, and I think my brain is confused.

Honestly, that makes me teary eyed! That was very sincere and I thank you for that. Sure makes more since than to see her doctor become a nurse :rotfl: !

My mom was d/c'd today. I asked her if they convinced her how important it is to take her meds. She is very convinced! She told me that God came to her this morning and told her that he had to bring her to her knees. It was time to take this seriously.

Then, as this could be on the "Spooky, spooky, spooky" thread, she just so happened to end up in the exact recovery bed that her late hubby was put in when he had stents put in 5-6 years ago. She sat with him throughout his recovery and remembered this spot very well. She was sleeping and awoke to someone bumping the foot of the bed. She was thinking (with eyes closed) that one of the nurses had accidentally bumped the bed with their knee as they came in. Then the right side of the bed was "knee" bumped. At this point she opened her eyes to see no one. Within a few seconds, the left side of the bed received the "bumps". She thinks it was her late husband. I told her that he was telling her it was time to "wake up!" to the facts. She is very convinced to take control of this situation and says she has had a revelation. I am so happy! She is now married to a real A$$$ who didn't even call or visit (he's been out of the house for 2 months now, but still feeds her BS so he can keep his drug habit alive with her belongings). She has now decided to get over it and move on! Believe me, all her dtrs (learned that shorthand!!!) are more thrilled with this than anyone (since we aren't the ones wearing rose colored glasses!)! We call him "spongebob", since his name is bob and is a HUGH sponge! Or no-job-bob, boob, Bartowbob (where is last "home" was for a year...prison) This is probably the cause of most of her BP problems, and if she can tackle this, I know things will improve fast! Thanks for all of your comments and concerns! You really educated me and got me to investigate even deeper. I found a great website that explained everything in layman's terms, in detail, about BP, what it means, how it works, how it affects heart, kidneys, etc.

You guys are the best!

God bless everyone!

Sorry, I meant daughter(dtr) not doctor(Dr), You know, like get well- live longer. I'm a Papaw myself but work with a lot a single Moms and have a dtr (not Dr) who is a single Mom so I understand what your going through. Besides I've just finished working 12's 7 of the last 8 days, so I'm suffering from some brain drain myself. Best to ya,H

P.S. I replied before reading the latest posts. God does answer prayers, not just mine (I did pray for you and your Mom), but I'm sure others did too. That's something else we nurses do - a lot of us pray a lot. Quietly, quickly (got meds (medications) to give).
