Timely thead. Seems like past several weeks I've been cursed by the same questions what to do with the leader of the pack, the ONE who will devore you, eat you alive. Yes, seriously. The devil, yes the devil, is out there waiting for you.subitilly waiting. It attacks in increasing devious ways, and please remember that 3/4 of the truth is still a lie, that's the key. i have been "fired" by a family member for doing whate is right for the patient, but the pt always smiles at me when she sees me. She knows and that's enough. for me. and that's all one should expect. Don't expect more.! Do all you can do. That's all you CAN do. Nothing more. James said-Words are not enough, actions speak louder than words. Nursing needs us.Treat us as a calling and just do our best.
  2. Rare, yes. But if the pt needs fluids, and say the Sodium is high - I had one last week with a Na of 162,Glucose 398, we gave water via G tube. Helped, for awhile.
  3. " To succeed in life, you need two things: ignorance and confidence." Mark Twain You must be very successful.
  4. Sounds like you work on a M/S unit with good peers who bring you along properly. We also assign Peds to the more experienced, some take only 1 in thier pt load , some take more. Welcome to our world.
  5. I'm outa here on this one:barf02:
  6. I don't understand your response. Refer- your 2nd paragraph, which IS what the thread is about. So unless you are starting a new thread, I will ust use your own words as a response.
  7. I watched House until Gena Davis became the Commander in Chief. Probally will watch reruns, hey, it's just mindless entertainment. I just wish he wouldn't abuse drugs so much. Thanks for tip on House MD.com
  8. I asked a couple of docs what their experience with them was and all three said that Lunesta seems to be as effective but milder side effects than Ambien. All said bad after taste usually made them prescibe Ambien. My personal favorite is Equate Sleep Aid from your local Wally World - it's not benadryl but Doxylamine Succinate 25 mg. You can find it beside Unisom. It's cheap too.
  9. I am truly sorry to see this thread become a agonostic/atheist vs. Judeo/Christian debate. Good nurses come in both genders, both sexual persuasions, with a variety of belief systems. The important point is that good nurses have a value system that makes them good nurses. What is nursing? my personal definition is " Nursing - the gentle art of caring" Before I became a born-again Christian I was a good nurse - very thorough and technical - now the patient has a different impact on me. Does that make me a better nurse? Probably not, but I must practice our craft the way I am, and so must each of you - no matter what your belief system. After all, "To thine own self be true."
  10. AND THE WINNER IS.... :barf02: that is definetly GROSS, I've had pts do gross things with it,, throw it at me, etc., but never eat it. :imbar

  12. Many years ago, on my first day as a 16 y.o. orderly in our small rural hospital a doctor asked me to go into a patients room, handed me a butter knife and told me to cut a plug out of the leg cast where he had marked it. I started to object, but he said not to worry just do it like I was plugging a watermellon. Well, when I lifted the plug out maggots started to pour out of the cast and the stench was awful. I started to head for the door when I realized I had been set up, so I slowly walked to the nurse's station with all eyes watching for my reaction. Which was "Do we have any room deodorizer?" Brought the house down, and I passed their test.
  13. I returned to nursing 23 years ago because God called me although I didn't know that for 3 years. I mention this because since God wants nursing to be my ministry I, therefore, need Him to be a good nurse. Some of the respondents don't feel the way I do, and that's OK for them. But for me, I will serve the Lord. To tvccrn and others - no it's not a perfect world, God has not intended it to be. Without sadness there can be no joy, without war, no peace. In other words there is indeed a time for everyting under heaven, as the Bible says.
  14. I work in a small rural hospital and our M/S census is usually in the mid-20's. Average is mostly elderly with pneumonia, COPD, IDDM. We also usually have 1-2 S/p hips or knees, 1-2 Peds pts. Deaths - maybe an average of 1=2 a week, not so many that it really gets to you. We only have 1 or 2 code Blues (cardiac/respiratory arrest) a YEAR, we transfer a lot of our sicker pts rather quickly to a larger facility. Hope this helps.
  15. Another reason I love M/S just happened today. We're a small hospital, and we have pts. from 6 weeks to geriatric. One of my 5 patients today was 20 months old and when it was time for his discharge I went over all the usual with his Mom and when I was finished I left the room. I was going down the hallway when I heard the Mom call my name, and I turned around to see the toddler coming at me with a big grin and arms wide open. I grabbed him up in a big hug and coldn't control the tears. Made my day. Just one of the rewards of M/S nursing.
