What are some good questions that I would need to ask when looking at hospitals to work at? Things like nurse/patient ratio, scheduling, benefits, etc. Is it okay to ask about salary? What are other questions that would give me a good idea of the type of atmosphere I'd be working in? Are there certain questions interviewers like to hear? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

I wouldn't ask about salary at an interview. Most hospitals will give that info out if you just speak to someone in human resources or a nurse recruiter (that has been my experience with several hospitals). The other questions that you want to ask seem fine. I would also ask about the orientation process, that's important.

Primary challenges of the unit or position you are applying for?
What type and is there support staff?
Do the nurses have input regarding systems, care and equipment, policy making, problem solving committees?
Scheduling process? Absentee policy/call in - some have "occasion policies" which you may be very limited if you become ill.
What challenges has the unit faced in recent months?
Do they assist with continuing education and funding for same?
How long is the orientation phase and what should you expect?
What professional development opportunities exist for nurses?
When and what were the results of thier last survey?
I always go a little bit early and try to get a feel of the enviroment. Observe staff in the halls or cafeteria for a few and listen to what they may be saying. Do they look burnt out or do you hear some laughter. In good spirits or complaining? Sometimes just watching and listening to those who dont know your there for an interview can give you a heads up or raise some red flags. I can tell alot from just the way the administrative assistant communicates when I enter to let them know I am there for the interview. Go with your gut as sometimes it's your best lead! I generally dont discuss salary at all unless a firm offer is given or the interviewer brings it up. Let them lead on that one.

In addition to the above, why is the position open? Also in your research about the facility try to find out if they have a high turnover of staff and is there adequate support staff for the unit.
