Hi all - Can anyone answer the following questions for Allina hospitals (Mercy and Unity in particular) and North Memorial?
1 - Do these hospitals hire new RN's in L&D positions? And if they do, will they hire a new RN for a part time position (24 hrs.)?
2 - Do these hopsitals have just mother and baby RN positions so you don't have to do delivery?
3 - What is the minimum hrs. an RN has to work in order to still qualify for benefits?
Thanks in advance for any responses... :)

I don't know. (I haven't had a real interest in L&D, and actually have one of the dreaded med-surg jobs. ) That being said, let me tell you what I do know, and hopefully some one with more information will also jump in.
From birthing at Mercy and clinicals at North I can tell you they do couplet care and North's L&D is seperate from Postpartum. My baby is almost 10, so any further info about Mercy would probably be outdated...
As far as new hires, individual NM seem to do more of the hiring for Allina, where as North hires new Grads into their New Grad ACE program (then into individual departments). Both appear to expect new grads to work at least 32 (64/2 wks) for the first year, although I do remember a post you started about similar topic for Allina a few weeks back that can give you more complete information.
I know you are doing reseach before commiting to going to school, and I commend you for that. But, some of the questions you have will be answered as you go through the program by instructors and co-nurses at your clinical sites. They will be able to give you information that is more pertinant to your situation at that time. (Things change... as I'm sure you know)
Good-luck with your research and classes if you are enrolled in prereqs right now. You are at the begining of a tough, but exciting and rewarding road!

MN Mom can you send me info about North's new grad program...
I actually got all the information needed off their website, following the employment opportunites, and the new grad ACE program tabs.

The links for information and the application are the bottom of the page. HTH, Good-luck!

Toots - I don't know much but here's what I do know or think to help answer your questions.
1 - I think they mostly would like you to have experience in other areas before starting in L&D.
2 - I think you'd have a better chance getting into a mom/baby unit and working your way into L&D. Probably your best foot in the door I think is to become a CNA in those areas while in school first (thought I read you were going to school).
3 - I work at an Allina Hosp in and minimum hours for benefits is .4
Hope this helps
Thanks for your response natkat2816!
I've been watching the Allina site for CNA positions but have not seen any for the mother/baby or L&D area. Do you know if they even hire CNA's for these areas? Also, do you know if Mercy or Unity have a seperate mother/baby area and then a L&D area? So, you can focus on just L&D or mother/baby.
toots - Unity has separate units. It is split up into L&D on one wing and Family care unit (mom/baby, peds, and gyn) is on the other wing.
Mercy - I delivered there with my kids and last I knew (7 years ago) was that they were on the same unit for delivery and post partum (except for when I delivered they were so full that I got booted to the family care unit as overflow along with 10 others)
Does anyone know what the max tuition reimbursement is for Mercy and Unity? Or, do they just reimburse you for all your expenses; whatever the cost? The reason I ask is because a community college costs way less than a private school and I'm wondering if I'd still have to pay some if I went to a private school. Thanks!
