question about visa and work as a nurse

Published

hi! im new here. i just want to ask about my current status right now. im graduating next year and planning to work in new jersey.

i will be marrying my fiance novemeber next year after i take the local boards here. my fiance has an hb1 visa, a working visa. and he told me that upon our marriage i will automatically have an h4 visa, which is a wife of a hb1 visa holder.

im planning to take nclex when i get to new jersey. but i dont wanna be a bummer while i review. i would like to work and help out as well.

my question is can i find a job in relation to my field with my degree (local board passer) and kind of visa (h4)? what do institutions in new jersey require upon hiring a nurse? do i have to pass cgfns and nclex first before i get to work?

i hope you can provide me answers.

thank you and more power

I'm assuming it's the same in NJ as in CA. No, you would not be able to work with that, you would have to get your own work visa. Caution: I once worked with a Canadian here with a work visa, and his wife was specifically NOT allowed to work. I don't know if it was because she didn't have a work visa, or if both parties are not allowed to have work visas. You need to start making some phone calls. Good luck.

Oh...your other questions: once you've taken the boards you can work with a permit, you would be an interim permittee. You would work as an RN directly alongside a preceptor and once you get your license you would be on your own.

I just talked with a doc I work with who is here on a work visa. If you do not have a work visa you will need to get one before you can be hired anywhere. There is no restriction on married couples. I guess the Canadian I worked with just had a residency visa for his wife.

1. Canadians are under the TN Visa, and the sopise is not permitted to work under that, only the nurse.

2. Cannot work with the interom permit for this nurse that is on the H-4 visa. You must have passing results of the NCLEX-RN to be submitted to even get the EAD that allows you to work. In order to start the petitioning process, you must have passed either the CGFNS exam or the NCLEX exam.

3. For NJ, the nurse must take and pass CGFNS exam. No way around that.

First suggestion to you, depends on where you will be in NJ, it may be easier to work in a close-by state that does not require the CGFNS exam. I would look into that first.
