Question about VA RN salary for Prime Care clinic staff

Question for any VA nurses out there about salary. Re: the Primecare RN, which apparently is the clinic ambulatory care RN position- any idea what salary range that position is in? Do you happen to know if it

is on the same scale as a hospital RN at a VA center? The VA used to quote salary ranges on the federal

job website, but this job opening has "Pay will be determined by Nurse Professional Standards Board".

Any info is appreciated, the job closes in a few days. If anyone has worked in a VA clinic, I would appreciate

reading about your experience there.

To my knowledge (I've been working at a VA for the last 2+ years), RN salary is the same whether inpatient or outpatient setting. The only difference is night shift/weekend shift differentials. Your salary will be based on your level of degree (diploma/ADN/BSN/MSN), any certifications you may hold and your years of experience. If you call the recruiter at the facility, they should be able to give you a pretty good idea of what you would be making though the board does make the final decision.

Hi, can any one tell me what does vn-0610-00 pay scale means? the position is based in houston,tx. I have 5 years experience as an rn and 6 as an lpn. I understand that the VA does not count LPN experience. I just want to get an idea of what they may offer if I am offered a job.

VN=VA Nurse

0610=occupation code

00=can be any 1 of the several GS grades for a RN (not 100% sure about this)

Since each VA has a different LPS (locality pay scale) it is diffucult to know what it is. The VA has 5 levels of nursing payscales with in grade step increases. Level 1 is a ADN or new grade with BSN, level 2 BSN, new grade MSN, working its way upto level 5 which is your exective nurse. This is just a general rule and you need to speak with HR at the VA to find out where you would be hired at. As a general rule VA pay is low for nurses with little experience and good/well for more experienced nurses. Also nurses at the VA work under title 38 rules vs. GS rules for pay. What this means is that you start out at 1 day vacation & 1/2 day sick leave for each 2 week pay period for full time.

The VA is one of the few places that will pay a nice difference for having a BSN vs ADN. When I worked at the VA and got my BSN I recieved around a 5K/yr pay raise.

Contact the recruiter at the VA you applied to. S/he should be able to give you an idea of what you'll be offered. Of course, the board (nursing board at the VA you applied to) makes the final decision. It will be based on your level of degree, your years of experience and any certifications you may hold. The VA is one of the few agencies where ADN/BSN makes a difference.

Some VA's do have different pay for inpatient, critical care, OR etc. Some do not, it all depends on the needs of the facility and the local area.
