question about transfer credits

Published

At this point I have a bunch of credits from several different schools. My first two years of school, which are the semesters that contain the classes I need for nursing, are all good grades. On the other hand I spend two years at a university majoring in a different subject where I did very poorly:down:. I don't need any of those credits to apply toward my BSN.

The school I want to get into is a private university that allows you to transfer up to 90 credit hours, and the only requirement to start the nursing program is a gpa of 3.0. If I transfer only the classes from my first two colleges, I'll have no problem with grades and will have a 3.5gpa. But if I have to include the courses from the other school where I did poorly, I don't know that I'll even get in:crying2:.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but do I have to transfer in those classes? It seems pointless since none would count toward my BSN anyway, right? But I don't want to be thinking I'll just breeze right in in August, only to find out my past is haunting me, kwim? Anybody know?:uhoh21:

While I appreciate the research you have done on my school's admissions procedures, the link you provided is for a different region than the campus I attend. They all have different policies/deadlines/and sometimes curriculum. I did speak with an advisor before registering, and her advice was to only submit the the transcripts that I wanted to be evaluated. The other credits are more than 10 years old and don't apply to the program there. I'm not saying I was deceitful on my application as I listed all previous schools. In my first post what I was trying to get across was to just submit transcripts for evaluation with good grades. Schools can't force you to have credits transfer in that you don't wish to be counted towards your degree. Sure, they may want all your transcripts, but it's up to you to decide what to have evaluated. The schools aren't stupid and I'm sure they could find out if you've recieved credit elsewhere. But let's say you have a less than perfect grade in one class at school A and would like to take it again at school B. School B is not going to make you transfer that in, they want your money and want you to re-take it there.

pnkrocdevil, I don't think you need to defend yourself, you followed procedures at your school, you did nothing wrong.

Just last night I discovered that another local college does just what you're talking about and only counts the credits that apply toward the program when calculating gpa  So, that brings my gpa well up into a competitive range and in addition they offer preference points for all of the pre-req's I've had, not just the science courses! I'm thrilled because that gives me one more option for nursing school and also hope that maybe the school I really want to get into, does the same thing!!

April&Em, that's great news! Hopefully your program of choice will have a similar policy. That's the thing about choosing a program, you have to go with the one that is most accomodating to what you have accomplished thus far. Good luck with everything!
