question about transfer credits

Published

At this point I have a bunch of credits from several different schools. My first two years of school, which are the semesters that contain the classes I need for nursing, are all good grades. On the other hand I spend two years at a university majoring in a different subject where I did very poorly:down:. I don't need any of those credits to apply toward my BSN.

The school I want to get into is a private university that allows you to transfer up to 90 credit hours, and the only requirement to start the nursing program is a gpa of 3.0. If I transfer only the classes from my first two colleges, I'll have no problem with grades and will have a 3.5gpa. But if I have to include the courses from the other school where I did poorly, I don't know that I'll even get in:crying2:.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but do I have to transfer in those classes? It seems pointless since none would count toward my BSN anyway, right? But I don't want to be thinking I'll just breeze right in in August, only to find out my past is haunting me, kwim? Anybody know?:uhoh21:

Well, I don't know what the chances are that you might get "caught," but most all applications for nursing school specify that you submit transcripts from all prior schools you've attended -- and, as with employers, if they found out at some point that you had omitted one or more schools from your application, they would consider that falsification of your application and, probably (at most schools), grounds for immediately being kicked out of the program (esp. if, as you say, you exceed the minimum required GPA without the "extra" classes but might not qualify if they were included ...)

Nursing is a field that requires a v. high level of personal integrity and honesty -- people's lives depend on us being honest and trustworthy. IMHO, dishonesty is a pretty poor way to start out in nursing -- just a thought ...

Best wishes --

Make an appointment with someone from the school you are considering. Explain your situation in general terms (without giving too many details unless asked) and ask them what their policy is. You probably don't NEED to TRANSFER all those credits, but that is a different issue from acknowledging they exist and/or submitting them for consideration as part of your application. It may be that they will require them as part of your application, but that you won't need to actually transfer them since they won't count towards your graduation.

Give the school a chance to be reasonable about it before you assume the worst and start your nursing career off with a lie.

I was in the same situation as you and only had my "good" transcript evaluated. Most schools say they want ALL transcripts, but you get to choose which credits you want to have evaluated. I don't think you're doing anything wrong by just submitting the trascript with the courses you need for your degree.

This is horrible advice.

Again, please meet with a counselor for the school you intend to enroll in before you follow the advice above. Every school I've ever applied to has required submission of any previous college coursework and omitting any coursework can be grounds for falsification and removal from the program if you were accepted and began at that school.

I have been in your shoes and was accepted to a program even with a few quarters of less than stellar grades. Its not worth lying to the school and then worrying if they will find out.

Good luck! ;)

I just wanted to clarify that my questions was not "can I get away with leaving out transcripts?" my question was just "do I have to include each and every transcript from over the past 10yrs?"

The wording of the website sounds like you can transfer up to 90 credits so I didn't know if that was a "if you want to transfer up to 90 credits you can" or "you must transfer all your credits up unto 90hrs" For the record I have close to double that amount of credits, so I was just trying to figure out what would count and what wouldn't, not trying to scam the system.

The school itself will determine what transfers and what does not by performing course equivalency determinations, the important point being, you must allow them access to all transcripts to determine this.

I understand you are merely trying to determine the correct way to go about this, but I am trying to emphasize the fact that you will indeed need to give them everything. My first college courses were taken in 1997 and yes, I did need to provide them when I applied to programs last fall.

You are doing something wrong -- you are falsifying your application -- if the application states that you must submit transcripts from all colleges/universities you've attended and you omit one or more schools that you've attended.

Transferring credits and submitting transcripts for review are two entirely different things -- if the application asks for transcripts from all your prior schools, they want you to submit all your transcripts regardless of whether the credits are going to transferred or not.

Schools tend to know if you have not submitted a transcript. In fact, when I applied to nursing school, the admissions office told ME which transcripts they were waiting for even before I had a chance to tell them they were en route! I don't know how they knew what schools I attended (I have been to many...one semester here, one semester there, etc). There obviously is some database they connect to.

I did not do anything wrong. All my CC requires for admission are your HIGH SCHOOL transcripts. When you submit any other transcripts it's for evaluation, it has nothing to do with the application process. For admission into the nursing program they only look at grades from pre-req courses, not overall GPA, so there is no need to submit a transcript that they don't require.

Again, you may want to research the school's academic policies a bit further, for your own sake (see below). As any other college I've even known, they will indeed want your previous transcripts, just as they ask for your previous college attendance on your application, as they do, I took a look. I'm proving this point for others who may come along and see this thread...I repeat: It is not a good idea to unknowingly or intentionally omit information from potential programs. It will come back to haunt you and as you've tried quite hard thus far, it is not worth it. For all potential applicants, do the work to learn the policies of your school regarding previous coursework.

Transcripts

The Ivy Tech Records Office must have an official high school or GED transcript on file. It is the responsibility of the enrolling student to request these transcripts from their high school. The transcript must include the date of graduation. **Click here for a transcript request form (PDF). Students with college credit must request a transcript from previously attended college(s). A request for transfer of credit form must be completed in the Records Office.
