Hi. I'm new here in this forum. I just finished my nursing education and I'm not yet a licensed nurse in my country (Philippines). I have a lot of questions. Please bear with me. Thanks.
1. I'd like to know if I still need to be licensed in my country (Philippines) to be eligible to apply in NY state? I plan to work and be a license nurse in NY
2. Do I need also to be licensed in my country to get a visascreen certificate?
3. Do I need to take and pass CGFNS exam to be eligible for NY state and get a visascreen certificate? Or is taking and passing NCLEX enough?
4. Is CGFNS exam pre-requisite in applying for NY state and for visascreening?
Please clear this things for me. Thanks again.

You do not need a license in your home country, only a completed set of transcripts.
You only need NCLEX exam passing, as well as the series of English exams to qualify for the Visa Screen Certificate. You do not need to take the CGFNS exam.
You have only three applications that need to be completed. Please read the stickies at the top of this forum, there is one for the fastest way of working in the US, follow that. It is for NY.
Thanks for replying suzanne. I have another question. What about the "request for registration/license" part in the visascreen application? How will I fill that up? How will I tell CGFNS that I do not hold a license in my country? Will my visascreen application take more time if I dont hold a license in my country as compared if I have a license? Please reply. Thanks again.
You can't fill it if you do not have it. That application is a basic form made to service as many people as possible. Just think of it that way.
Remember that your Visa Screen Certificate is based on you passing CGFNS or NCLEX and the English exams, it is not based on you having a license in your home country.
You can just write not licensed in home country, and leave it like that.
Suzanne, another question about CGFNS exam. Sorry if i do have many question. I'm quite still lost. This is my first time to apply. I don't have a single clue in applying to US. My question is, how about in the immigration and seeking an employer? I heard that most employer require CGFNS exam. Also, the immigration lawyer and the embassy here in my country might ask me for the CGFNS exam. Will that be a hindrance if I don't have CGFNS exam? I'm really thinking of not taking the CGFNS exam. I just want to clear if CGFNS exam is not required even for a foreign educated nurse seeking US employment. please clear this things more for me. thanks a lot.
I do not like the CGFNS exam, and unless you are going to work in Michigan, there is absolutely no reason take it. If you have the funds to pay for the NCLEX, then go ahead and just take that.
For the agencies that require the CGFNS exam, that doesn't make sense to me, especially for the nurses that have already passed NCLEX and I have seen that happen. The only reason would be that the nurse can do the exam without having to travel to another country, and it saves on expenses for the agency. But in the long run, only more expenses.
You're saying that CGFNS exam is really needed because it will depend on your employer? I'm planning to work in NY or california. will i still need CGFNS on both state? What about in the immigration? will i still need CGFNS exam for immigration? Thanks again.
CA and NY do not require the CGFNS exam, only NY requires a special credentials eval done by CGFNS. You only need NCLEX and the series of English exams.
Immigration wants a VSC, and that is either CGFNS or NCLEX, and the English exams. Employers in the US want to see a passing NCLEX, they could care less about CGFNS exam.
