Hi I'm in process of moving to NC- not sure if Raleigh area or Charlotte. My question is- how do you handle childcare if they start a year round school. Seems as though they have them in both cities. I was thinking of trying for a weekend only job because I figure daycare for 2 boys every 6 weeks and daycare all year long for my little one might/will be Very costly- any insight would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, just wondering what thoughts you guys may have regarding year long school. Is it better because they don't have a long summer?

I would think regular school would be a good idea. I am from around Charlotte and I'm not familiar with any year long schools (unless they are private) they usually run aug/sept to may/June.

As far as mecklenburg county (where Charlotte is) I don't think there are any schools that go year round but in neighboring Union county,a lot of the schools there do go year round and it goes 6 weeks on and then 3 weeks off for the entire year. I am pretty sure most other counties that surround mecklenburg don't go year round either.

I used to teach at a year round school in So Calif (3 months on, 1 month off) and I LOVED it! My kids and I were out of school at times other than the usual 3 summer months off so we could go on vacations NOT during tourist season. There are plenty of child care centers that offer care for the times that they are out of school. In the Charlotte school system (CMS), there aren't year round schools. Union County (which is RIGHT next door to Charlotte) does offer some year round schools; in fact, the new school year starts TODAY for some of my friends' kids.
Planning for daycare for year round vs traditional wouldn't cost any more since, over the course of an entire year, they're out of school for the same amount of time. Would you rather pay for a few weeks of full-time childcare every few months or full-time childcare for the entire summer, all at once?

I live in Charlotte & the public schools are not year round. Although, I wish they would switch to year round because always having a group on vacation would be a huge help to the overcrowding in Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. I don't know what the schools are like in Raleigh, but I have a middle schooler & a highschooler and I am NOT happy with the school system here. There have been a lot of budget cuts, lots of teachers fired & my sons freshmen classes averaged 30 students per 1 teacher. Communication was terrible & there are too many students for the teachers to effectively work with parents when there are any issues.
