Question about retaking courses for better grades...

Published

I was just wondering, does it look bad on a nursing application that a student has repeated some courses to improve their grade? I have repeating some courses and have received better grades, but I'm scared they would prefer someone who did great the first time.

thanks

I would think that they'd rather have good grades the first time around, but I think retaking courses to earn better grades also shows a determination to improve yourself. You're not simply going to accept the lower grade, you're going to try and raise it, and that shows moxie :-) I'm retaking my Intro to Psych class right now because that C- I earned 17 years ago isn't going to do the trick.

Also, I have four other classes from my failure of a first-time college student at 17 that I'm going to be retaking if I don't make it into the nursing program for this Fall. My cumulative GPA is the only thing that would keep me out, and if I retake the classes it will hopefully show the administration that I'm really serious about being a nurse and doing whatever it takes to make it.

I agree with Coriander. It shows determination, drive, and responsability that you are taking these classes over. How does your school admit? Interview, points system, lottery? If we knew we could better answer your question. My school does points so as long as the cum. GPA was fine they wouldn't care if you retook classes.

Good Luck!!

My school goes by points, GPA, and the NET.

Well then I dont really think it'll effect you to much as long as your cumaltive GPA is good. Most schools on the point system (no interview or essay) go strictly by points and aren't allowed to judge based on class attempts (my school also does the points and they can't count anything like that against you) Good Luck!

Of course they would rather see the good grades from a first try but it is better to repeat the course and get a better grade than to leave a poor grade on there and expect to squeak by. Different school admissions committees have different ways of looking at this and different policies about what they will accept. Still best to get the best record that you can, even if you have to repeat a course.
