Hi guys, I'm working right now as a Nursing Assistant in a Nursing Home and I'm waiting as well for the processing of my application in NY Credentials Verification via CGFNS. I'm applying for the NCLEX-RN btw. And I was wondering when the time comes (hopefully), will I be able to consider my work experience in the Nursing Home as "experience" itself for applying as an RN? I mean would that be of any help for me in getting a job as an RN?
I've been pondering lately about that matter. And I'd appreciate your comments and opinions. :)

Its really hard to tell what any recruiter will want these days. The job market is really, really bad out there. Usually new grads arent considered at all for RN positions and are told to get the requisite one year exp as an RN. Ummm..ok, sure...where???
Its tough. The best thing you can do with your experience is to make contacts that may be able to hire you as an RN. Good luck to you!

Hi, I am also waiting for my papers to be approved to be able to sit for NCLEX. It is really taking so much time. I am a foreign trained nurse and I need to take an additional requirement which is to pass TOEFL (english exam). I really want to work even as a nursing assistant. I have been here in US for almost 2 years. Staying in the house 24/7 is not a joke. So my question is ( I hope you don't mind me asking and I hope you have time to spare to respond)...can I apply for nursing assistant position even if I am not "certified" and w/o experience? I shall wait for your response. Thank you. I will really appreciate your help.

Hi Kalleigh,
In NJ, you have to be certified as a CNA, which includes sitting for an exam and receiving a certification number. You might be able to apply for some positions that do not require licensing, such as unit secretary and patient care assistant. However, some places might not be willing to hire you if they know you are going to leave as soon as you take the NCLEX.

Regardless of your experience as an aid, you will only be eligible for new grad RN positions.
