Question about out-of-state meds

Hi!

I work at a camp where most if not all of my campers are from the same state where I live and am licensed as an RN.

I have a counselor who has pretty severe asthma. She is from a different state and is asking me if I can give her a bi-weekly injection (new this year). I have no problem doing this, but want to make sure I'm legal about it since the order for the medication will be from her out-of-state physician.

I have tried to look at my state's nurse practice act, but could not find any info specific to my situation.

Can I administer this medication to her as long as I have an order from her doctor?

We have a camp physician, should I have her sign off on this order?

I've never had to deal with this out-of-state stuff before (she had meds last year, but they were self administered).

Bi-weekly injection of what medication? Xolair?

Yes. The medication is Xolair.

I work in an Allergy/Asthma/Immunology clinic, typically this is given once a month, or in some cases twice a month. There are special requirement to store, mix (swirler required) and administer this. You need to have access to epinephrine/epi-pens in case of anaphylactic reaction. And also access to 911/EMS in case of life-threatening reaction. Is the camp in a rural area?

I personally wound not be comfortable doing this.

Yea there's no issue with the meds being from out of state so long as a valid MD order is associated with it. My camp is in PA, has a doc from CA on a temp liscence, and gets all our drugs from a pharmacy in NY.

my my camp has given allergy immunotherapy, but never Xolair.

OK- thanks Alex. The camp is not super rural. EMS response time is 3-4 minutes for basic rescue and 10 minutes for paramedics. We have stock epi-pens at camp, although I might I will look into this med a little further and make a decision. Again, thanks for the information.

I've seen docs from a camper's home state call in Rx to Pharmacies in the state where the camp was. Check with BON or doc's licensing board or Pharmacy Board to be sure.
