Question to nurses who have worked LTC AND Acute Care

Published

I was thinking today of the contrast between LTC and acute. What would you identify as the major differences from a nurses POV?

I'd especially like to hear from nurses who switched from acute to LTC environment. What did you like? What surprised you? What difficulties did you encounter? How did your role and work shift change?

Well I have always worked LTC, well except for a short time which was in a hospital et there were to many chiefs et not enough indians for me!! I have been charge nurse et managment in LTC. Like you had said it depends on the facility you work for, I have worked for facilities that have been pretty much good, there are facilities here who do total patient care but you only have 4 patients. I have found that I get more out of my CNA'S et respect if I attempt to help them, which I do. But even if you dont I feel you can still get that respect. We have awesome CNA'S but I think the facility makes them, if they can get away with it they will!!

Sooo..I guess I've asked another question to those of you who have worked both areas.

How do you compare the lifting? Is the physical work harder in LTC or is it harder in primary acute care settings??

After 20 plus in acute primary care, the old bod is ready for a break....ouch. :(

I've worked with good CNA's and bad CNA's in my travels so I know what you mean. I will have to choose very specific questions in my interviews. Wish I knew some nurses in my area to ask...I am new here!

I love a team that works together, but I don't want to be involved in every aspect of lifting 20 plus patients every shift...so I'll look for a place that dedicates itself to good staffing of good CNA's. Easier said than done I'm sure...but I will have to interview cautiously!

Thanks for everyone's input!
