Question for all nurses

Hi, my name is sara, and i am a nursing student, im not posting this on the student forum because, id like an answer from people who have already finished schooling!..

my big but not so complicated question is ....

during school did anyone use a laptop? to take notes? ..do you suggest a laptop or a Pocket PC?

Went to school too long ago for the laptop thing. Pen and Paper and if okay with instructor tape recorder. I think I learn and remember things better when I physically write stuff down.

Have a PDA for the last 6 years or so but strictly for personal use. I would die without my calender.

Many pda's are compatible with a portable keyboard (folds up nice and small, about the same size as my pocket pc). The portable keyboard makes it very much like a laptop without nearly the expense and is more portable than even a laptop. The other thing about the pocket pc is that it uses a windows platform - I was able to write papers in Word on my pocket pc, put it in the cradle connected to my desktop computer and print it out - no problem. My pocket pc was INVALUABLE in preparing for clinicals. The programs that I purchased for it cut my preparation time to about a quarter of what it was without it.

Did you take notes in class with your PDA?...?

I too used pen and paper. I had my own little abbreviations to speed things up and wrote small so I could write faster. There is something about writing stuff down that helps cement concepts in my mind. I was also lucky that my instructors mostly posted an outline of their lectures on my school's intranet, so I could print that out and fill in as they lectured.

ive decided on in some/most classes, just using pen and paper, since i have realized coming home to neatin up my notes/type them, i re-inforce a lot, since i am forced to read my notes and concentrate on them!

That is what I have always done with college and I plan on doing it with nursing school this fall. I take the notes in class (mainly jot down main points) and when I get home I review the reading I had done for that class and fill in the blanks on my notes. next I type them out and they go into a three ring binder where I keep all my stuff for review and future reference. Then I start in on reading...etc for the next day.

Very time consuming but it really helps me because I need to do things again and again in order to be confident in my knowledge. I am not sure how well it will work for me in nursing, but at my last college, I was a A & B student because I could always remember so much info.

Chevelle that is what i will be deffinately doing!.... its better then trying to read all of my scribble like 10 days later and not know what the heck i wrote down!..
