Question about a New Grad post Interview

I had my first RN job interview yesterday. During the interview the nurse manager asked "If I were to call your previous employer what would he tell me about you?" I answered that question to the best of my ability, honestly and positively. That question got me thinking after the interview. When I applied for this position back in late December, my previous employer was still there in that unit, I called the previous hospital I worked for and asked for my previous manager, low and behold he moved units!!! So I rang him up in his office, we small talked for a bit, then I told him I had an interview in a ER and told him about the question she asked, and he chuckled he said, here is my personal cell, give her that I want to give you a stellar reference. I called her extension and left a message that I wanted to update my application regarding my previous employer, and give her his correct office number, since I filled out the application back in December and he was no longer at the number I gave, also that I spoke with him and he wanted me to give her his personal cell number if she was to call him for a reference.

So, my question is....did I do the right thing? or was it over the top and too forward? I really want this position, and does it show with what I did respectfully or do I look desperate?

I did send my thank you note out last night after my interview, so she should be getting it tomorrow. I was told that she would make her decision by the end of next week.

I just have never done anything like that before and I'm a tad nervous about it.

Thank you for responding to my post. I found out yesterday I got the job!!! I am so excited (and nervous) about being a ER nurse. I just wanted to make sure I was on the right track, evidently I was

I use that same question as part of my interviews. Calling to confirm prior supervisor/employers number active is a good idea....and I would expect a prospective employee to update me if info has changed for when I check references, nothing is more anoying when unable reach person......

.....and that application goes to the bottom of the pile.

Thank you. I thought that was a good question to ask as well, and I'm glad she did. Because when I was filling out the application I made sure all my phone numbers and references were up to date, and I if she wouldn't have asked that question, I probably wouldn't have called my previous supervisor, ha! He had just changed positions 3 weeks ago too! I'm just glad it all worked out.

I agree with about info not being updated, it can be frustrating.
