Question for Hopsital Recruiters

Published

Hi, I'm a new nursing grad who just passed my Nclex. I've been having a dilemma which I'm wondering if any RN recruiters can answer. What do hospitals prefer - a new grad with no experience or a new grad with home care of nursing home experience? would nursing home or home care experience be considered experience? I live in NYC. I've been hearing that top NYC hospitals consider it negative experience to work in a facility that isn't considered a "top" hospital. And if you think I should try to get nursing home or home care experience - which do you recommend? Thanks so much in advance.

I can't answer for the recruiters, but I can share my experience. My first job was in a LTC rehab unit. I had also worked for 2+ years as a home health aide and (then part time for same agency as an RN doing supervisory visits). When I was thinking about a new job, I called the recruiters and was told they look for longevity (loyalty to a company) than necessarily what kind. It held more sway that I had one job for over three years and had stayed in my LTC until I was offered my job at the hospital I work at now. They hate job hoppers regardless of where the person worked.

I'm not a recruiter, but I can tell you that in NYC, you will likely have to change your question from "where do I want to work?" to "where can I even find a job?" These days, most folks in oversaturated markets really cannot be choosey - they must take what they can find and move on from there.

Of course there will always be exceptions, but those usually are people who know people, if you know what I mean.

thanks for your reply! I have been working for a company for 5 years but not related to the nursing field. My question really is what to do while I try to get a hospital job. I can either continue working at my non-nursing jobs which means conveniently working from home or I can try to get a job doing home care or LTC. I am wondering really if the hospitals see it as in advantage that prospective employees were working as an RN in LTC or home care.

thanks roser13! I know its tough in NY but I do know many nurses from my program who waited it out and ended up getting their first job in a top hospital 1/2 year after passing the NCLEX. I do have some connections in a LTC facility which is why I'm thinking about it.
