Question on courses

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hey everyone.. i was just wondering a few things such as if having a Advanced Biology (Anatomy and Physiology) high school class is giong to help me greatly for the college version of it? i have heard many things about the A&P classes about how much memorization it is and I have already memorized almost all of the bones and muscles (including functions) and many of the body's systems and organs. Is this class really difficult or is it just harder without a background of anatomy at all?

another thought i had was, what would you say was/is your hardest nursing class?

i start my freshman year of college this fall and I am just thinking a little about the future classes I will be taking at Northern Michigan University.

Oh ya. Another random thought. Were you nervous for the clinical parts? and how do the professors generally explain the theory part of the classes?

Thanks!

Chris

Interesting question, I did not take anatomy in high school. From my own experience its not the anatomy that people struggle with its the physiology so its going to depend on how indepth you instructor was.MY teacher is known as being hard but there are teachers that are easy as well . personally Its an important foundation for you to build upon when you start the nursing courses so I always say choose the teacher that will challenge you the most ;) but i really don't have the background to answer you anatomy college level vs high school. We did go pretty indepth with the features of the bones ect...

I think that having had Anatomy in HS will help you in the college level course. You have muscles and bones memorized that's part of the class. The other part - physicology is easier to understand if you know what the terms being used in lecture. It will definelty help that you already have some knowlege of anatomy. Good luck in college! I didn't have anatomy or algebra in HS, so I'm struggling with both right now. Hope to make it into a nursing program Spring of 09.

I did not take A&P courses while in high school, but did really well in them at the college level. I agree with one of the previous posters in that knowing the terms will help you remember the function. I thought the anatomy portion was mostly memorizing and recall. On the other hand, I thought the physiology was making sense out of it at the function level. I thought it was a little more difficult esp. areas of respiration, digestion, metabolism, urinary system because it is not as simple as knowing the steps, but more so understanding why the body reacts the way it does under certain circumstances. Also, if you're looking for a class that will prepare you for A&P then take Medical Terminology. Microbiology is a pre-req at my school and that help me some w/ the Kreb's Cycle, WBC, immune response, ABO blood typing, but that's it.

I took anatomy and physiology in high school, my senior year actually...and then freshman year of college I completed anatomy and physiology 1 and 2 (took up the whole year for both) and I felt that taking it in high school gave me a great jump start for the college version. I basically learned the same things, but it was much more fast paced in college, so since I already had heard of everything, it wasn't as stressful as I initially thought it would be. Now, as to questions regarding clinicals, I couldn't answer because I am waiting right now to get an acceptance/rejection letter from where I applied for Nursing school. Good luck on your adventures! Anatomy and physiology is FUN and easy as long as you stay on top of the notes and everything! :)
