Quality of education is frightning

U.S.A. New York

Hello to everyone. I am about to start my clinicals with BMCC CUNY in Manhattan, New York. I am terrified that this is not a good program and have not been able to find anyone that would know to ask. I have only my preclinicals this semester to base my judgement off. My classes this semester are of the lowest standard and are making me very worried about the quality of education I will be receiving in the nursing program. I am not willing to sacrafice the rest of my career on a so so education. If anyone out there knows anything about BMCC's associates RN nursing program, Please let me know. I start next semester and am getting very anxious to find a different school and start the wait all over!!!!!!!

Have you tried the New York nurses forum? I go there pretty often bc i'd like to move there and they have some great threads. Go there and do a search, i bet you will find something.

Not again. A classmate of mine taught in that program in the 70s. One of the reason she left was their low standards. I guess not much has changed.

Hey Neuro,

I'm a pre clinical nursing student also. I'll admit I've heard nothing positive about BMCC's program, But I am a big believer in taking responsibility for your own education. Funny enough with the worst teachers I've ended up learning the most, because I pushed myself to do more.

My best friend comes from a family where every female in the last 3 generations is a nurse. And from what I'm told no nursing program completely prepares you to hit the ground running in a hospital. In my humble opinion if you're accepted in a clinical program I'd go for it.

But if you're looking for a higher level of education try LaGuardia (the school I'm about to leave). It's clean, diverse, the staff is knowledgeable, and has the highest education standards I've witnessed in a college to this point. It's the little community college that could, lol. But be warned the competition is insane. The cheap tuition, great resources, and high Nclex passing rate coupled with only 50 seats a term is a total feeding frenzy. My friend with a 3.85 GPA was rejected. The nurses in my life strongly recommend lich and Beth Israel (though a little pricey) the intimate setting, great education, and the constant hands on experience outweigh the cost.

I hope you find the right place to be. Good Luck

I am an evening/weekend student currently finishing NUR 313 at BMCC and I can say that I truly enjoy the program and feel satisfied with what I have learned there. My clinical experiences have been wonderful; the instructors fabulous. I think that everyone is different, so what may be good for one person is not good for all others. You have to find what works for you and not let what others tell you totally influence your decision.

My education is not based on what others have told me. I have taken full responsibility for my education from my preclinicals days and have studied enough to feel comfortable with the material I have encountered. I have also utilized the instructors and CLT's as resources and that has proven wonderful because of the wealth of information they have. Being proactive and involved in lectures and in clincals has been ideal.

I know many nurses that I've encountered in my clinicals that graduated from BMCC and feel satisfied with the education they received. I believe I too will be happy come gradutation.

If anyone has any questions, please send me a PM me and I will give you some more information so that you can make an informed decision.

Thanks!

based on your judgment you feel that bmcc does not have a good nursing program. you haven't even started the actual clinical portion of the program, wow, so you are letting people's rumors get to the best of you. before i actually got into the program i heard so many stories, which i found out to be not true, as i progressed in the program. people that i know who were not accepted had their bag of rumors, those pcn who were discouraging each other, so that they can get the better grades, and then there are those failing nursing students who are upset, or the ones who fail to hold their "a student" status, and those who simply feel that they are "too good for the program students". i know them all!!! everyday i attend bmcc; i am forced to be with these students and many more that simply i do not have the time to write about.

one thing that i would advise you to do, is start at a program, that you feel will complement your learning. some people believe that this program is too hard, simply, i feel that nursing is all about critical thinking!!! it is not about sitting down and memorizing the material. any nursing that you do go to, you must have understanding of the material. i have friends in many other nursing schools who have stated the flaws, ups and downs. whether in cnr, adelphi, la guardia cc, queensboro, bcc, molloy, nassau cc, cmsv, csi, liu. nursing school is not a peace of cake. my friend at liu said that an entire class of students failed an exam, and the professor had to give a retest!!! wow.

neurotransmitter--> as a student you must take control over your studies...you can let other people do it for you. i've seen students fail and their friends passed with flying colors. the type of culture that i am from "no one left behind", and that is the type of person that i am, i would rather help 15 people instead of seeing 1 person failing. some students are stingy...and they want to be the only one of top. in bmcc, there are a few who by spreading false pretensions...allow others to fail out or pcn students do not even get a chance to be accepted, they already had their minds made for failure based on other people's point of views.

what exactly have you heard about the program? ok, now me being a 3rd semester nursing student i've discovered to ignore all rumors, because i decided not to trust bmcc students for several reasons. as a pcn student, i took classes with students that were discouraging, some spoke about transferring to other colleges. they'd heard crazy rumors about the profs, and others were deceiving their friends so that they can get into the program. eliminate the competition. then there are those other students that prey on weak student's minds, feeding them "bmcc is hard" go to ****** school, or "this prof. is ******, we are not going to do well", or "do you know someone told me *******", her exams are *******", or "i did not even open the book****, or "i can't believe i did so bad" in reality student has an 86%, meanwhile another is struggling, or has failed, or "this professor is so*********", or "the exam was so hard, i think i did bad" student has a 94%. if you did not know bmcc accepts 80 day students, and 40 evening = 120 students every semester. i do not know of other cc in nyc that accepts that many. and hunter a few semesters' ago increased the amount of students accepted into the clinical portion of the program.

so now you tell me if these rumors had stood in my path...no and i will not allow them to!!! i am very grateful that i am a bmcc student, and i will hold my heap up high. if you can't do that neuro--i suggest you to transfer elsewhere. by the way, did you know that most of the other cuny schools you must spend a semester with them, in order for you to apply to get accepted into the program. many of the private schools will accept you because $$$, c students get accepted at many private schools. so

now you tell me about the poor standards at bmcc.

You are SO RIGHT about EVERYTHING. To tell you the truth if it was because of BMCC students I probably would not have been in the nursing program, or made it this far into the program!!! Keep up the good work!!!
