Hello!!
I will be relocating to AZ soon and I accepted a job at St. Joe's Med. Center. You may have seen this in some of my other posts...Anyway..hopefully if all goes well I will be visiting Phoenix this week!!!!!!!!!!! I will be staying in Mesa and I was wondering what I absoluetly have to see while im there!:) Restaurants, awesome places, etc. All suggestions are welcome:):)
Where might there be some great white water rafting?
Depends on where you're going to be. Are you guys planning on going up to the Canyon? If so, then you could always tube the Colorado River.
But if you're just going to be in and around the valley, then you could tube the Salt River .... that's what I do.

How bout great hiking? Im so excited that i'm moving somewhere that I am able to do out door stuff all year round! Im just worried im going to die of heat at first. Im not used to it, it gets around 80 here and I about die, but it is soooo humid here it feels soooo much hotter.

We actually do hike in the Phoenix metro area.....there are books with hiking trails but the best place (and one of the most challenging) is Squaw Peak. It is a pretty easy hike for the first 30 minutes, then gets really tough. We hike early in the morning, 5:30-6:00am. At that time, it is still pretty cool, at least right now it is and the best time for hiking. If you go up north, to Sedona, Flagstaff or the Mogollon Rim, temperature isn't an issue. Lots of great places to take a walk!

Yep, we hike Squaw Peak around here, and South Mountain. Those are some good ones for a local hike. Going up north you can find hiking trails just about ANYWHERE. If you go up to Sedona, Flagstaff, Payson, Prescott, Pinetop, Showlow, etc, etc ..... anywhere up there will have hiking trails, just get a hiking guide or ask around. Or just follow the signs.
This time of the year you have to go earlier in the day. Like the previous poster said, if you go up north to hike the weather won't be an issue ..... the only thing you have to worry about is the altitude if you're not used to it.
Typically we can do stuff outside 10 months out of the year. In July and August most people just hide out indoors in the AC. It's almost unbearable to go hiking when it's 115 outside. Even if you go in the early AM ..... the temps will still be 100+ at 4 am.
You'll be ok with the heat though. Just make sure you drink a lot of water, this desert will dry you up faster than you could think.
If you need any advice regarding Central Phoenix neighborhoods, restaurants - just PM me. My wife and I live in that area - and know all the "spots."We also "did our time" in Ohio - 3.5 years in Worthington, OH in the Columbus metro region!
My son is moving to Scottsdale next month to work at Scottsdale Health Center. He is a restaurant afficianado (he drives me nuts!) but I will be there for a while and I'd also like to go to some good ethnic restaurants. I love real tamales. Can you suggest some places to go? I like most food, esp. Chinese, Thai, Indian. Also, any in Scottsdale, if you know of any.
