Hello nurses...Im going to be starting a new psych nursing position here in a few days, so excited, have been interested in psych since school...Have already ordered a couple of psych nursing books to brush up on the basics, any advice or pointers would be much appreciated....thanks :-)
Wingding! You are a special person! I have been in the mental health field long before I was even a nurse! I truly have a heart for the mentally ill. As you say, they are the true "disparity" population. They are misunderstood, maligned, feared, and forsaken. It is a tough lot to deal with but also very rewarding!
Welcome! I love, love, loved psych nursing so much that I became a psych NP. I had to retire for medical reasons this year and I miss it so much!
Oh, I'm so excited for you! It is challenging, exciting, thrilling, depressing, boring, exhausting and exhilarating. Will you be working in-patient? What kind of people will you be caring for?
I can't wait to hear your impressions.
As others have said, people with psychiatric disorders are the "red-headed step children" of the medical world. They need and deserve caring, professional, enthusiastic nurses. Thank you for joining us.

Ha! Ha! The B52 and Three Amigos! I assume this is the Benadryl, Haldol, Ativan cocktail!? Our new colleague will learn this soon enough!
Welcome hotfornursing!
