Psych Nurse Practitioner

Published

Hi People! I am about to embark on my first nursing job in my career and I need some advice. I am finishing up my last semester in my RN and this summer I have to apply to internships. I am sponsored by the hospital I work for and can pretty much apply for any floor I want to including ICU, ER, NICU. I currently work in a busy ER as a paramedic starting IVS and foleys. PRN I work at a psych center for adults and teenagers and have been doing that for 6 years. I have been thinking a lot lately about getting my nurse practitioner especially in psych because that is where my strengths lie. The areas I am currently interested in are NICU, L and D, and ICU. I know how it is for some to get into NICU nursing I think I would love that but I do not feel like it would compliment my future goals of PHMHNP but I may change to Neo NP later if I love it that much. I am so afraid of being too specialized in NICU so should I start in ICU as a new nurse to get experience. I think ICU would be a good learning experience. Or should I go for it and choose NICU? Thanks so much!!

The fact that you can apply in every unit doesn't mean that you'll get an offer from every unit. I'd apply, see what offers I got, and then worry about making a choice.

Yes I totally get that. I was not implying I could get any position sorry for the misunderstanding. The way that the internships work for my cohort we have already signed contracts to work for 2 years in one area but you need to make sure that you apply for an area that you really want because when you get the first offer and you should not turn down. So I am pretty much trying to figure out whether I should make my first choice for offers NICU or ICU.

I'd something other than psych and ER.. Since you already know what those settings are like.

I don't think this is gonna make or break your career though...
