hi there!! just wondering if anyone would be kind enough to have a read through my personal statement as i'm applying for the postgraduate diploma in adult nursing and am not sure what they're looking for! please be ruthless..i want to improve it as much as i can-also, its a few lines too long..any ideas which bits i should cut down??? thanks so much
my belief that compassion and caring is fundamental to any functional society has fuelled my ambition to become a nurse. i am drawn to adult branch as i feel it offers the widest range of experiences and opportunity for expanding my knowledge and skills, while helping to make a difference to people's lives.
with a strong desire to help others and interact with different people, i became involved in several social projects at university. i thrived on the sense of satisfaction i got from serving food at a homeless refuge, mentoring adults with learning disabilities and befriending patients at a rehabilitation centre for people recovering from serious head trauma. with a nursing career in mind, i was keen to broaden my practical experiences further in order to gain a better understanding of a nurse's role and develop skills to enhance my practice and relate to patients more sensitively.
this led me to take a position as a social care worker in a residential home for young people with a visual impairment, learning disabilities and complex needs. being part of a team committed to supporting these young people in all aspects of their daily lives including mealtimes, personal care, accessing educational and social activities, i have gained many practical care skills which provide a fundamental basis to nursing. likewise i have demonstrated the ability to maintain records, plan and implement individual care plans, liaise with other professionals, carers/family members, contribute to lac reports and reviews and take responsibility for my own professional growth and development. i am able to work productively as part of a team, as well as use my own initiative to solve problems and support my colleagues. i believe being able to work and communicate effectively with a wide range of people and promote a safe, working environment are central to an adult nurse's role, skills that i have gained and use on a daily basis. i have honed my interpersonal skills since some clients display challenging behaviour by remaining calm and supporting them following relevant strategies and policies. various in-house training courses and studying for nvq level 3 hcs have taught me how to apply theory to practice and understand the benefits of a holistic approach to caring as well as being committed to equal opportunities policies and non-discriminatory practice. being responsible for administering a variety of medications on a daily basis has widened my knowledge of pharmacology and different health conditions.
through an employment agency, i have gained experience of hca work in a local hospital and residential home for the elderly. i am thus aware of the importance of a multi-disciplinary team in delivering a high level of healthcare to patients and have a good understanding of the nmc code of professional conduct, essential to all nursing practice.
studying a ba in french and hispanic studies has provided me with transferable skills such as organisation, report writing/note taking and planning to cope with the academic demands of the postgraduate adult nursing course. i have recently completed as human biology to provide me with a scientific basis for nursing, which i thoroughly enjoyed. combining study with full time employment demanded good time management and a passion for study so the opportunity for life long studying in nursing really appeals to me.
i have lived and worked abroad and am currently studying tamil and hindi/urdu, therefore i am confident interacting and communicating with a diverse range of people. being able to reassure and support patients in their native language as a nurse will help deliver a positive healthcare experience.
working alongside nurses in different environments, i have witnessed the demands and challenges they face on a daily basis and am eager to use the skills i have while developing others to embrace a dynamic career and offer each patient the high quality healthcare they deserve.
also would it be better to write less but make separate paragraphs?? i had to squash it all up to fit it in the form! thanks again
