Hello! Has anyone who applied to Providence when applications opened up on June 6th heard back yet regarding setting up an interview? I was told the process is different from last year. They said they would reach out for setting up interviews starting June 12th.
The.RN.Nerd said:okay. I applied for fullerton and orange. that is why I saw the 45$ rate for residents. interesting how the rate depends on location. when you say home unit you are saying in a unit you are assigned to all the time? I understand the 6 week period but how does scheduling work you set your own schedule?
Just received my offer... I am SHOCKED! Pay is $38 per hour!! That is considering my healthcare experience...
The.RN.Nerd said:It still might be worth going through regardless because of how hard it is to secure a spot in a residency
But with the nature of the new big bill and Providence's recent lay offs it makes me nervous to jump ship... I just graduated in May and passed my NCLEX early June this was my second interview for a residency. My current employer does not open their residency until the fall. I am sending an email to try to negotiate pay, the pre screening texting I did said the new grad rate was fixed at $45 so I want to follow up.

I have an update from the recruiter... They use a "Base Pay Structure (Blended Rate)"
The base hourly wage for the first 8 hours of a 12-hour shift is $38.57. For the last 4 hours, you get an additional 50% of $38.57, which is $19.29 extra, making those hours paid at $57.86 per hour. Which averages out to $45/hr.... Odd set up but glad I asked.
The blended rate is mostly used by hospitals with 12-hour shift models to balance pay across the full shift while staying compliant with California labor laws...
So, for a 12-hour shift:
First 8 hours = regular pay
Last 4 hours = overtime pay (1.5x)
To keep pay consistent across departments:
Rather than advertise a $38.57 base and talk about OT separately, they present the blended average of $45/hour to align with other units and maintain transparency across RN Residency positions.
If you work only 8 hours, you will only earn $38.57/hour, because:
You didn't exceed 8 hours, so no overtime pay applies. The blended rate only averages to $45/hour when you complete the full 12-hour shift.

There is a scheduling portal that opens up before the scheduling period. Every shift is allocated a certain amount of slots. For example let's say you want to work Friday, maybe there will be 8 slots initially, so it'll say 0/8 under that day. Eventually if a day gets filled up you are no longer able to self schedule for that day.
You can still ask a manager to put you in for that day but it is at their discretion to do so, and some times for various reasons such as the aforementioned, a manager may alter your schedule. Generally in my experience which obviously varies per unit/hospital, they tend to be respectful of the self schedule, but ultimately there are times where the schedule you put is altered, so no 100% guarantees.
