Prospective New Nurse

Hello everyone, I'm definitely what you might consider a "junior member". Not only to this website, but to the field of Nursing. I am on a path right now, that quite possibly will lead me into the field of Nursing. I'm 25 and already looking to make this career change. I'm getting very bored in the field I'm in right now, and am looking for something a bit more challenging, yet rewarding. I have about 5 years experience in patient care working in the area of chiropractic care. I believe very much in Holistic Medicine as well. Anyways, I'm struggling with the option of going for an ADN or BSN program. I have an Associate Degree in Arts and Science as well as a certificate to practice as a Chiropractic Technician. So I've had about 4 years of school already. From what I've read from your discussions, this is an ongoing arguement. I'm really kind of interested in the BSN personally. But I'd like to hear any feedback any of you might have. I know ultimately the decision to go into nursing has to be my own, but any insight and encourgement anyone could give is welcomed with open arms :kiss

Both my mom and Aunt are semi-retired nurses and would do it all over again. I respect nurses and believe the work that they do goes above and beyond their worth.

welcome to allnurses. I believe you are headed in the right direction with just the desire to become a nurse. I am an ADN grad and happy with it. I may go back one day to get my BSN but for now I am just enjoying working at a hospital. Good luck with whatever you decide. We need nurses.

Thanks for the prompt feedback RNalways! Did you find your ADN program pretty grueling, or manageable?? I hear the ADN programs can almost feel like your going through an accelarated program at times...

Specializes in Med-Surg, Trauma, Ortho, Neuro, Cardiac.

The ADN program is no less grueling or hard than than the BSN, it just has fewer courses. Go for the ADN if you don't feel you can wait four years. But if you can manage it, and you already probably have a lot of the co-reqs already done for your BSN since you have other degrees, then go for the BSN.

The BSN gives you more options careerwise, even if you don't use it right away.

The ADN will get you out there quicker and you can always go back and get your BSN. When it comes to hospital nursing an new grads, there basically isn't any difference in how you start out, whether you have a BSN or ADN, your a new grad orienting to the world of nursing.

So there are a lot of options for you here. Good luck.

Good luck!
