Pros/Cons of working on a transplant floor!

Published

Hi every1! I just went on an interview yesterday for a GN position on an Abdominal Transplant floor! The idea excites me yet scares me! They seemed very interested in me and I liked the UD right away but does anyone have any opinions about working on a specialty floor such as this one right out of school?

This is what I want to do but I seriously need some guidance. A few instructors from school advised me to "go for it". They said as long as I get the correct orientation and precepting and I enjoy that type of nursing then I should be ok since I am fast learner. The hospital is world known for this type of treatment so I guess that makes me feel at ease a bit. (make sense)

Sorry for babbling! :uhoh3: Thanks for any input!!!

Hi! I say go for this job because it obviously interests you. I would ask about how long your orientation will be since it is a specialty area. I am a new RN & decided to work on a med/surg floor for my first job , but that is mostly because I really love med/surg. I think we all have to pick a setting that will make us happy. Good luck! :)

I think that if it interests you, it would be a great place to start. I recently interviewed on an organ transplant floor and it was a wonderful unit. They had a low turn-over for RNs there and the nurses were really awesome. See what the turn-over rate is on that and if you can shadow someone on that floor. That might help you with your decision. Good luck to you! By the way, I noticed you are in PA and so am I....Do you happen to be in Philly? That would be funny if we interviewed on the same unit. :)

I am in my last semester of an ADN program and am LPN externing in transplantation. I am also a liver recipient so it is GREAT for me. I plan on staying there as an RN. The transplantation unit is basically an upscale med/surg floor. It is a step down unit from the ICU and also overflow from med/surg in my case. My unit does hire new grads, so I say go for it.
