So I am wondering how others teach the cleaning of urinary meatus before inserting catheter. I have seen some books say do out sides r,l and then over center over meatus. Others say straight down over meatus and then once down each side. Is one technique better than the other? I was thinking center first then side, side, which is also more along the technique when we clean over suture lines. Any info out there?

When we teach nursing students we stick wth the FNC technique. Furthest, Nearest, Center...of course for female. This leaves the meatus being the last cleaned prior to insertion. We use bullseye/spiral technique for male. Start at meatus and then clean in a spiral bullseye technique.
Hope this helps.

I also teach outside outside center, but I will warn the students that they may hear differently from staff nurses.
