  1. PICU to L&D/MB

I can't speak from personal experience, but I worked with a nurse who was a former PICU nurse, and she was fantastic. L&D of course has sad/stressful/horrific moments, but not like PICU. My former coworker was much happier on L&D.
  2. Does anyone else ever envy their patients?

God, no. I'm usually handing them a newborn, and I am *so* over that stage of my life. Newborns are cute, but those things don't sleep, man.
  3. ER nurse stabbed by patient

I saw ZdoggMD's facebook post about that yesterday. So scary. I have never experienced that level of violence at work and hope I never do.
  4. Best advice I ever got, and that I remind myself of often: "No" is a complete sentence.
  5. PSA

OMG that is insane! I'll definitely remember that, wow!!
  6. Lying to Patients. Is it for the Best?

I guess I am guilty of lying to patients if you count lying by omission. In that I don't tell them, "your baby is having xyz decel, which means xyz, which means we need to do xyz intervention." I actually did do that when I was a newer L&D nurs...

  8. C Section Post-Op Rx

Okay, that's not "pendulum too far," that's negligence. The first time a c-section mom gets up to go to the bathroom, I don't care if her nurse is busy, then SOMEONE needs to be there to help her, be it an aide or another nurse. She shouldn't be al...
  9. C Section Post-Op Rx

Here, maybe this will help provide clarity. The AAP has a table of medications "usually compatible with breastfeeding" in this PDF. Table 6, starting on page 5. http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/pediatrics/108/3/776.full.pdf Here are ...
  10. C Section Post-Op Rx

The pediatricians, obstetricians, midwives, and lactation consultants I work with all disagree with you, but okay. *shrug* Did you read the research?
  11. Just had to Heimlich a kid

You are awesome!! Kudos for keeping a cool head! When my own CHILD choked I totally froze. It was my husband that did the heimlich. Mommy fail.
  12. C Section Post-Op Rx

I know this probably sounds evil, but it is normal to expect the mother to participate in and perform baby care after a c-section, even 1 or 2 days after. It's part of the care plan, in fact, to get the mother to participate in and take over care of...
  13. Can posting about a friend breach HIPAA?

OMG Mi Vida Loca!!! That's NUTS. Whoa. So glad you got out of it and how horrible of her to try to throw you under the bus like that.
  14. ZDoggMD

    Love him!
  15. Gossiping at the workplace

BTDT, got the t-shirt. Keep your mouth shut and your ears open. Never take sides, never participate. Walk away from the nurses's station when things get heated (suddenly have to pee/check on your patient/stock a room). If you can't walk away, bec...
  16. Can posting about a friend breach HIPAA?

Lord almighty. Scenarios like yours are what lead me to a) never be friends with coworkers on social media and b) never talk about work or anyone's medical condition on social media and c) keep my social media accounts clean and locked down. I shou...
  17. I see all these posts in the student section (and here) about TEAS and HESI. Y'all, I have NO recollection of taking such an exam to get into nursing school. Maybe I blocked it out? I don't even remember what the application process to get into nur...
  18. Okay, I have a dumb question.

Whew! Thanks for the replies, I was really starting to worry about my already spotty mom-memory (kids suck out brain cells, I swear).
  19. Needed to vent a bit

I hate it when people do that. I think your working conditions are deplorable, and definitely think you need to report it to the labor board. They HAVE to be guilty of violating SOMETHING.
  20. Needed to vent a bit

It was awful!! Yes, one of our (senior) residents actually called management in the middle of a horrible shift told mgmt we were drowning and asked them to come help. Management refused. You know when the DOCS are coming to your aide, it's bad. I...
  21. Can posting about a friend breach HIPAA?

No, no violation at all. You weren't her nurse, and any information you shared was shared with her consent, and it wasn't PHI such as her diagnosis, her lab results, etc. etc..
  22. C Section Post-Op Rx

Toradol worked great for both of my c-sections. I was onto motrin only at the time of discharge. Everyone is different. Edited to add for clarity: not all women have a great recovery from c-sections. However, toradol has been proven effective a...
  23. C Section Post-Op Rx

Because it has been proven safe (I actually worked as a mother baby nurse when some of the trials for this drug were going on to determine if it was safe for breastfeeding, among other things, way back in the day), and because it is excellent for pos...
  24. C Section Post-Op Rx

We do what Klone's hospital does, with the exception that Toradol is given q6h for a full 24h before being dc'd. Once po meds are being taken, even if the toradol is still being given, they can take Norco on top of it if needed. Switch to motrin po...
  25. My resting heart rate is 70-ish. Until I drink my usual 3 cups of coffee, then it's off to PVC town. Mmmmmmmmm, coffeeeeeeee. Dee-licious, heart-jumpy goodness in a cup. Yeehaw.
