What is it with nurses not taking their breaks? No matter where they work, whether it be hospital, community etc we seem to have a problem. I understand that they have a lot of work to do but surely its more important to take a break and recuperate which will lessen the chance of mistakes been made. I feel refreshed when I take forty five mins which I must emphasize is on my own outside of the building. I almost feel angry that this time is not catered for due to the culture we work in - like guilty sheep. When will there ever be a stop to this.

Just wanted to say I think you are very honest writing about a medication error. Most people are too deeply shamed, embarrassed or whatever to admit to others their mistakes. We have all done it, we are all human.

I trained in the late 80's. There was more of a hierarchy in terms of respecting the trained professionals. Much more formal in terms of no chit chat at handovers and break time for students was always adhered to and worked out as a priority before the shift began. Also the rounding's included proper visual checks of patient skin and pressure areas.Consultants were more feared when they did the rounds on the wards and it was always at the same time.

If it was me I would hand my notice in at the earliest opportunity and get it over with. I am sure you will have no problems finding work in the meantime. Things will stay the same where you are now and you will always be working overtime if you stay. Is it feasible for you to work for an agency. As you have only just started this new role it might be possible to give one weeks notice, check the contract. I am sorry you have had this experience.
