    New Grad L&D

Hey, I'm in Nashville also! Have you looked at Centennial? They're piloting a new residency program to begin in December I believe, and I know OB is a track choice. Might be worth looking into and then if you were to get hired, you could try and work some other job to bridge the gap for a couple months? Or I'd suggest looking outside the city (Hendersonville, Lebanon, Smyrna, etc...) and see if you might have luck there. A lot of people want to work right in the downtown loop, so you might have less competition outside a bit. Another option is you could always accept any nursing job you can get, and then apply to Vandy's Feb. cohort. You just can't have more than 6 months of nursing experience for that one, so you could still be considered. Best of luck!

Do you overspend on luxury items as a nurse?

As a new grad, fresh out of my 4-year undergrad BSN, I'm making way, way, more money that I ever have in the past as a nanny or assistant. So right now, I am indulging myself a little bit. Replacing my worn out laptop with a Mac, finally getting some matching decor for my house, and other things here and there. However, when I graduated and then got a job, I took the time to sit down with someone and really go through my expenses and my income, as well as my loan debt, to create a budget that was maintainable and still allowed $ for personal spending. I'm certainly putting money away for the future, and I generally am pretty frugal by most people's standards, but at this point in my life where I'm not worried about supporting anyone else, it's a nice change of pace to be able to afford a few nice things here and there!

    Vanderbilt Nurse Residency Summer 2016

From everyone I know who did or didn't get in, GPA isn't as important as you might think (although obviously the higher the better can only help.) Whatever their algorithm is, it's quite interesting, and I think it really comes down to the interview and your prior clinical experiences more than anything else. I would study up on the behavioral interview style as much as you can, and try to get any extra hospital/clinical experiences outside of school if possible. All just my two cents, but good luck!

Tips for getting into NICU after first job?

Hi everybody, I'm graduating with my BSN and NICU is my dream job, but none of my local hospitals are hiring. Any tips on what other fields I should pursue that would help me transition to NICU later on? Thanks!

My Dream to be a Labor and Delivery Nurse

I have to comment on this, because that was me just a few short years ago! Fascinated with birth from a very young age, and for the longest time I was convinced I would do nothing else with my life. I felt like everyone tried to talk me out of it or change my mind, which was hard to hear over and over until I decided to not let the negativity get to me. I was tired of justifying my passion! I enrolled in a 4-year BSN program right out of high school, and am as of today, 20 days from graduation! I had an amazing OB clinical experience initially, and was lucky enough to do my senior preceptorship in labor and delivery with some of the same nurses from the year before. All I have to say is that my ten weeks of preceptorship were some of the best weeks of my entire life. L&D nursing was everything I'd hoped it would be and more! But at the end of the day, my heart has been leading me in a slightly different direction these last few years, and my preceptorship only confirmed that. I've come to realize that my true heart and soul passion lies in NICU nursing. I'd been really hung up between L&D/NICU for a long time, and I feel so grateful to have had the opportunity to truly participate in both fields (I did NICU through an Externship) so that I can feel 1000% sure in my decision. I'm interviewing for jobs this week, so fingers crossed! Best of luck to you on your journey!!

For all y'all who got acceptances, how long do you have to give them an answer? Trying to think about how long I should realistically keep Vandy at the top of my list. Thanks!
