  1. new nurse- NP or PA school?

I absolutely understand what you’re going through. I went though a similar experience when I first started bedside nursing. It just wasn’t for me. School doesn’t prepare you for all the short comings of hospitals and ratios etc. who wants to work in...
  2. Classism in the Hospital-MD vs. RN

It’s called production and revenue. Also I’m guessing you or your SJW boyfriend didn’t go to med school for 4 years, another 4 years of residency then another 4 years of fellowship. OH! All while their student loans rack up a ton of interest (since m...
  3. Medical office-Drama

I would stay until the baby is born (congrats by the way) and then look elsewhere. You can def go back to the ICU or maybe find you a good outpatient surgery center in your area. Either way.. doesn’t sound like place is healthy for the long haul
  4. Orlando FL 30.50 an hour 3.25 differential 3-7pm 4.00 7pm-7am differential 4.25 weekends I have a little over 1 year of experience and no bsn yet
  5. Presidential Executive Order about Kidney Care - July 2019

I think it’s fairly realistic. CKD is a huge problem so it’s nice that the focus is starting to shift towards prevention as well. I like the living donors incentives too. I will be interested to see how that comes to fruition. On a different note... ...
  6. I highly doubt something so ludicrous would happen in the US. Posting online about things that may reflect on how you take care of pts is questionable but even then.. Americans free speech rights have been upheld. I hope she appeals and wins.
  7. A retention bonus is a great idea. The key is getting which ever hospital organization the nurse is working for, to actually make enough headway for someone to want to stay on board.
  8. First E-Cigarette Ban: Mark a Win for Public Health

I mean the ban isn’t the issue. The problem is that San Francisco is the same s-hole that has Homeless defecting and shooting drugs up on every corner. But yes, let’s ban e-cigs. Makes a ton of sense
  9. Open visitation in the ICU

Hello my CC nurses and anyone else who would like to share! Quite a large number of hospitals are starting to adopt a more open visitation policy. There is a lot of research that support this for family satisfaction but at the same time, it decrease...
  10. #AMAGetOutTheWay: Nurses, Doctors, and Students United

?????? Maybe you should go to Washington and sit in front of your state senators office until they listen to you. All great ideas.
  11. #AMAGetOutTheWay: Nurses, Doctors, and Students United

Ah that was just another liberal temper tantrum protest. Medicare for all, and covering illegal immigrants is one of the most insane and irresponsible ideas in today’s political climate. Our healthcare system needs an overhaul but this not the soluti...
  12. Taking patients

My suggestion exactly! I have been working as an ICU nurse and recently switched to an outpatient surgery center. It is like heaven compared to working with critical patients in a hospital. The pay is more as well, which i guess depends on what ar...
  13. How would Medicare for all affect nursing?

I also dont think that people understand Medicare is what it is because people pay into the system for 30,40 plus years. Then like you said, its bare bones at that. How can they say "Medicare for all" when the people who will be covered, have neve...
  14. Breaking New Grad Contract

I also work for this particular hospital system. Without naming names....it used to be called one thing and now its called another. ? Your contract is pro rated...so you will owe less than the original amount. However just let them know you are mo...
  15. Sitting down - New nurse looking for advice

You said it perfectly! There is more to nursing than bedside. I think outpatient pre op/pacu would be excellent for you, the only issue is that most of those require at least 1 year experience. If you have some good connections, you may be able to...
  16. Bring back our childhood diseases!

I would say if you polled most anti vaxxers..they would be ignorant liberals. Good try at a Trump jab though.
  17. Medication error

Hi! I am very sorry this situation happened to you! I think my thoughts mirror the majority here....no the Cardene did not cause this pt to code. I work in an ICU and this patient should have had rapid response called and they should have been taken...
  18. Non productive overtime

We are not allowed to clock in before a certain time, which doesn't give much time to look up any info on pts charts. Lots of nurses get there before, look things up and then clock in. I would never do that, I find time during my shift to look up b...
  19. lunch break handoffs

I find myself angry at this post..not angry at someone or any one comment just angry that hospitals are so cheap that they can't provide anything to help the nurses out. We just ask our neighbors to watch out patients while we quickly eat in the bre...
  20. Bravo to you for being able to keep your composure. I work in a rather liberal environment (60/40) and I am always open to having conversations about why people feel and think the way they do. I don't think political convos should be kept out of th...
  21. Neuro exam, following commands vs mimicking?

This is the only answer you need. I usually don't ask patients to squeeze my hand because that can just be a reflex. Otherwise... it's all following commands
  22. Open visitation in the ICU

Thank you everyone for your candor! From the research I have done, about 90% of all ICU's have some kind of visitation policy. Some are more restrictive obviously but at least a little structure. I work in a unit that reminds me of the wild wild ...
  23. Leaving tasks for the next shift

That's really nice of you to be so concerned but things happen. If you are able to complete tasks and not leaving them for the next shift that's great but if not than they will have to get over it. Nothing is perfect or planned in this field.
  24. Need input! Whats your experience with critical thinking?

As a new grad in ICU... I absolutley love these questions! I tend to ask myself something similiar to this at the beginning of my shift but the way you put it into words flows a bit better. Thanks so much for sharing!
  25. Congrats on the interview! I work as an RN in neuro ICU so I may be of some assistance. To be successful, I think you need to be able to assess a pt neuro status extremely accurate. In our unit, we get alot of post tpa patients, SAH, SDH, and hemmo...
